Rented a house on the beach at Las Penitas, had a great time. Developing area, but during the week, a pretty, tranquil community. Some very good new restaurants. Easy to get to from Leon, take the bus for about 45 cents!

In our two and a half weeks to Nicaragua, Las Penitas was our favorite. There is only one road so it is very quiet but was an unreal beach with awesome waves, lots of restaurants and beautiful sunsets. We stayed at Aaki hotel which I...More

Saw lots of birds on our tour including a kingfish. Also saw a raccoon and an iguana and even a raccoon. Many tricolor herons, white herons and even a great blue heron. Our guide did not speak English but pointed out all the wildlife.

You will love this town, during the day you can walk up and down the coast, dipp yourself into the ocean, have a bite to eat and at night, the crashes of the wave will give you serenity and peace.

Yes you could get a taxi, and might be more economical if you could share one with others at your hostel or lodging. I don't recall the name of the bus terminal but it was not one of the larger ones. I think it was the... More
