Poneloya is a beach located only 20km from the colonial city of León. You can enjoy nice views of the ocean and delicious fresh fish. You have to be careful with the waves which can be tough on high tide!

Just north of Las Penitas, separated by a rocky headland is Poneloya. It is a small fishing village, and does not get the foreign tourist numbers of Las Penitas. Mostly locals here on holidays and weekends. It is very quiet, but does have a number of restaurant/bars, mostly at the far northern end. There are a few convenience stores along the road, but it does not have an ATM, you have to go to Las Penitas for that. Beach is similar to further south, but way less people.…

My bestie and I visited specifically for sunset. Playa Poneloya did not disappoint. What a wonderful expansive beach filled with black volcanic ash. We especially loved that the beach was quiet. There were only a few people including fisherman and dogs frolicking on a lovely day. It was the perfect setting to enjoy the local beer and lounge watching the strong currents of the Pacific Ocean. …

We have spent many week at this beach and find it to be clean and safe. There is a good surf break, but a massive under current that goes with it, You always find good food at the restaurant at the end of the road.
