You need to slide down

Seriously, book the tour where you slide down on a board. Be in shape enough to hike up the side of the volcano, and walk everywhere you can.

It took us an hour to hike up the volcano. Gave us awesome views. We were down in 1 minute by a baord. It looks scary in the beginning buth it isn't. So worth doing! Bring water, sunscreen and a hat, you need it!! We booked it via terra tours and costed us $30 pp.

If you are in for some adventure, I highly recommend the volcano surfing on Cerro Negro. I went with a tour group called Sutiava Travel. The ride was exhilarating, but safe. I would do it again.

We had Jesus as our guide. We hiked up Cerro Negro, the views are amazing. Jesus is very knowledgable about the history of this volcano and Leon. Once we reached the top, we saw the crater which was steaming and very interesting. We continued to the spot where we were sliding down. Jesus went through the protocols and safety precautions.... It was hot and windy but the views were amazing. The ride down on the board was intimidating but ended up wishing I braked less and got more speed. Lots of ash in the face and in the mouth but an excellent experience.

We went with quetzal trekkers and the guide Thomas. Really good! The trip up the mountain was fun and had good views. The ride down in a board was real fun and after the frist try you could go again for a second time.

Prepare yourself physically and mentally for navigating the loose-rock, uphill trail to the top. It's relatively short but also relatively steep. Lots of opportunities to stop and rest if needed, and take in the amazing views all around. The volcano itself was impressive to see when reaching the top - the smoking rock that we were standing on and the... More

The third volcano we visited in five days, it's distinction is the volcano boarding. Walk up is around one hour, and is not difficult, you can see fumes from the crater but not much else (for crater sighting, go to masaya at night), and going down is very fun (it's more exciting than it seems watching other people go)
