It is a four hour trip, one hour driving from Leon. The walk is rather strenuous, but everyone can do it. Bring enough water and a cap. A hat will be blown away by strong winds at the top. Very nice views in the crater, and on the frozen lava flows. Surfing down is nice, but the fun is quickly... More

We booked through Quetzaltrekkers and they were fantastic! Great guides and awesome lunch. They'll take you down twice if you want too! The climb up was pretty intense with the wind, but once we got to the top viewpoint it was all worth it. Such great views and amazing wind that's blowing so hard you feel like you're flying. The... The hike is so hot, and takes over an hour, but it is really worth it. They give you a few breaks. I paid the few dollars extra to have someone carry my board...I recommend it if you don't have the best arm strength! Make sure to get a photo at the top! The tour itself is really well organized... Went in a group of 4 and the experience was AWESOME! The hike took us about an hour and some spots got a little tough, but we made it to the top in one piece. I recommend comfortable shoes, lots of water, and pay the extra money for a tour guide.

Really nice tour, you have to make a short hiking, you get to learn a little bit of the volcano and the town around it, and really fun sandboarding over an active volcano.

Cerro Negro Volcano Boarding trip. At Quetzaltrekers we were given water and a rucksack containing goggles, gloves and a boiler suit. We drove out to the volcano where we were told that it was going to be windy which would make for interesting conditions. That was the understatement of the year. We are more than fit enough to hike up... More

Would definitely recommend it's one of those things you have to try at least once! I will say though that I was not expecting the hike up to be so tough. Maybe it was just a super windy day but I felt like I was going to fly away with my board. There is the option though to pay someone... More

Long hike up for the volcano board down, but it was worth it. The views are beautiful and the volcano itself is unique...huge and black and stark. Volcano boarding is worth it, definitely research your options on the fastest boards. Bigfoot is reputably the best.

What can you even say about the life-changing experience of visiting Cerro Negro? We have memories to last a lifetime and will definitely be back soon. I'd recommend staying at a hostel in Leon and coming with your hostel mates and staff. We made some good memories with new friends from around the world on our epic adventure
