The size of the temple looks huge considering the fact it had been sculptured with solid granite rocks. Amazing is the volume of engineering/architecture involved in it.

The temple complex at Gangaikonda Cholapuram is not at the same scale as the Brihadeeshwara Temple, but is truly magnificent in its own right. Since it is around 70km away from Thanjavur, it was almost completely empty. Definitely worth a visit.

Set in well kept and litter free gardens the temples are in wonderful condition (despite the British having removed some blocks for their own constructions). The location is peaceful and I spent a wonderful hour or so here. The temples are still... More

We visited the temple on the way to Thanjavur and actually this is the temple we do prefer from the series of the three and altogether in India.

Very nice and large temple with lots of detailed sculptures and paintings. Was very popular in the 11e century. It shows by its size.
