This is a historical park as well as a state campround. Very quiet at nice except for the wind and waves on Lake Superior or the bell buoy if the big lake is calm. The east campground had a bathhouse built by the CCC using poor rock (copperless rock) from local mines. The fort was only ever used for show... More

Built in the 1800s to protect the first mining rush, for copper, that founded many of the old Boston family fortunes. Very pure copper nuggets can still be found naturally on the ground. Imagine hoe very isolated this fort would have been. On an isthmus between Lake Superior and a large inland lake.

We had read a little about the fort, but had no idea there would be so many buildings and so many informational set ups. The history was very interesting. The fort portion of the park was well maintained. Nice scenery on Lk Fanny Hooe. Would recommend visiting if you are in the Copper Harbor area.

Fort Wilkins was built in Copper Harbor in the mid 19th century as a base to police the mining boom. It never saw any real action as such and fell into disrepair but has been restored as a fort museum. I thoroughly enjoyed going through each area of the fort and seeing the artifacts. It takes about two hours to... More

We loved Fort Wilkins State Park. The fort itself was superb with some of the best interpretation and exhibits for this type of historical exhibit we've ever seen.

Campground was good; nice and clean showers/restroom. Fort was very educational. The playground i the common area was great for the kids.

The fort was well laid out and easy to see. They had many exhibits to explain conditions during the time the fort was in use. At the end of Sept it was pretty quiet which added to our enjoyment. There was plenty to look at and it took about 1 1/2 hours to casually go through.
