Mansion Tour -not Newport

If you thought you had to go to Newport to tour the mansions-think again. The rich and famous also liked to visit the Berkshires.

While this Gilded Age cottage has beautiful bones, she's in need of a lot more restoration before it's really worth a visit. We tour a lot of these types of places and though I give huge kudos to the staff for the labor of love they've put into this old house, it feels a bit thrown together and haphazard. Upstairs,... Most if not all of the great houses in this area are closed in the winter, so we were happy to find that Ventfort is open and heated (mostly)! The house is a work in progress and its story is very interesting. Our guide, a young woman, was excellent although the tour of nearly two hours could probably be shortened... More

Okay, I totally loved this place! The history was amazing! The mansion was beautiful. The tour guide was lovely and answered all of my crazy questions and I had a lot of them. The mansion was decorated for the period, but unfortunately none of the furniture was original because a developer raided the house of all its original splendor. I... More

Renovation on the interior is still undergoing renovation, but nevertheless it is a beautiful building set on lovely grounds. Many of their windows are of stained glass giving a somewhat gloomy mood to the interior.

We had high hopes of the museum but it was so disappointing. It is clear that it is run on a shoestring and the owners are trying to bring in events such as weddings to try to raise funds. It's ok that none of the exhibits are original to the house and the guides do their best, but there is... More

Very interesting tour of a gorgeous gilded age "cottage". The restoration is a work in progress by a group of very dedicated people who thankfully saved this beautiful landmark from demolition.

We had a delightful guide named Marsha who sat with us and gave use the history of the home and its many transformations before it was bought by a developer and was slated to be torn down. It was totally stripped of everything and taken down to the studs. So sad but it is being lovingly repaired. The movie "Cider... More

The docent we had was terrific, Very knowledgeable with a good sense of humor. House is definitely a work in progress but a great example of the period and changes in Lenox. We had tea in the dining room which was pleasant. The cucumber sandwich was the best!

In fairness, I believe that this small mansion from the gilded age is still undergoing renovation. nonetheless, it is a dark, rather gloomy structure with some historic interest which the docent does a good job explaining. But it is sparsely furnished, with just a few rooms. And, the main downstairs rooms were filled with tables and chairs for an private... More

We are sorry to learn you were disappointed in your visit. We do sometimes have to set up for private events during times we are open to the public as the alternative would be to close the house early. We appreciate your feedback. More
