I grew up on this trail. My father would bring me and my brother to hike this trail frequently as a child and I continue that tradition with my kids. The trail has become its own worst enemy because it has become so popular. I would not try and hike it on a weekend or you will literally find yourself... More

The A trail is 1.7 miles, but seems longer when you get to the rocky portion of the trail. The hike along the river has great views of the river gorge and with it being late autumn the foliage was minimal to provide unobstructed views of the river. I would recommend the trail during the work week as the weekends... More

I have no idea why I thought that I could hike the Billy Goat Trail last Saturday and have a peaceful commune with nature. Instead, there were so many people on the trail, in front of me and behind me, that I never lost sight of them. Not to mention the fact that everyone was yakking, shrieking and drowning out the bird... Parts of the trail are very rocky with a few steep climbs but totally do-able. Stunning views. Very family friendly. Saw some experienced hikers with their entire families, including infants. Probably not the best hike for little ones though as some of the trail is rough and very rocky - large boulders. A bit crowded but we were there on... More

Walk carefully!!!!my niece fell 80' into the Potomac last week. She survived. Such a beautiful place but focus on more than the beauty.

Plan on taking this detour deliberately. The views are terrific, and it's just enough off the beaten path to be pleasantly quiet. Signage keeps you where you headed where want to go, and there are plenty of wide spots along the way to stop for a rest and enjoy the forest and views.

I regularly hike the Billy Goat A trail. Round trip from the Tavern parking lot is 4.5 miles and takes 2 1/2 hours usually. This is a challenging, but short, technical hike with a bit of rock scrambling and a climb up a 50 ft rock wall. Billy Goat A is the only hard trail of the 3 Billy Goat... More

The Billy Goat Trail offers stunning views and a strenuous climb on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. This is a rugged trail, perhaps best tackled with a guide or someone who has already hiked it. Dress for the season. Carry water. Wear rugged shoes.

We last visited section A of Billy Goat trail (1.75 miles) during the week and early in the morning - simply fantastic! Although there were a few other folks out by 9:30 AM, before this it was relatively quiet. All in all, a great day hike! There are some difficult and challenging sections, but I did see some older folks... More
