A Jewish Photographer friend invited my wife and I here to see his incredible exhibit. We met in the charming and beautiful garden which most people, myself included, walk past all the time without noticing. They have really nice exhibits and are extraordinarily friendly to visitors. Not being Jewish, I had never known it existed. Beautiful, friendly place to sit... More

We usually make an effort to see Jewish Museums wherever we travel. But didn't expect there to be a museum in Portland. I would call this a work in progress. The Jewish community in southern Maine has renovated an old and dark synagogue into a historical and art center. The synagogue is still functioning but has been made into a... More

Not a "flashy" museum but exhibits were interesting. Also enjoyed the art exhibit. The exhibit of stories from Holocaust survivors was informative and very moving. The museum is definitely worth a visit.

My hubby and I went to see this Maine Jewish Museum and lo and behold we were changed by the visit. "Kinda" hidden back off the road, in a Neighborhood once nicknamed the Jerusalem of the North, stands the Maine Jewish Museum (and the Etz Chaim Synagogue). In the heart of downtown Portland, with other significant historical churches for neighbors... More

Came for the multi media exhibit by a Maine Jewish artist. Museum is in synagogue. Would not have known about it but saw article in the Boston Globe.

If you have extra time and are interested in history, stop in this museum. It is free and there is a very knowledgeable guide. There are some very poignant stories from survivors of the Holocaust on the second floor.

A lovely synagogue is in. the midst of beautiful gardens with enough benches throughout you can spend time to sit and enjoy. Peaceful, spititual, calm, and quiet. The museum has lovely artwork and interesting exhibits as well as a memorial to the Holocaust victims and survivors. Read the stories of survivors who later settled in the Portland area. This is... From the beautiful landscape and local artwork to the inspirational stories of Holocaust survivors, the Maine Jewish Museum took us a little over an hour to visit. It is a wonderfully restored synagogue and the story of its renovation is truly inspiring. Visitors can sit in the peaceful synagogue, read about the history of Maine's Jewish community, and enjoy works... More

The Maine Jewish Museum has some interesting art work and exhibits that detail the history of Jewish life in Maine, including remembrances from Holocaust survivors, but also from kids who went to Jewish summer camps in the state (including several famous names). If you're Jewish, you should definitely stop by. The building also houses an active congregation.

Located in an old Portland Synagogue, it was interesting to read about the the history of Maine's Jewish community, and see photos. There was also a small gallery with artwork. A bit off the beaten track, but a good stop.
