A nice slice of nature, close to hotels

This trail was super close to the hotel we were staying at. My wife wore my daughter, and I walked with the dog, and there are some semi-steep inclines, but overall not a rough... read more

If you love being outdoors, hikes, sounds of nature, and wildlife then you should go here. It's not a very hard hike/walk but if you like peace and quiet you'll love this.

Look up the review by Mainemountainbear who tells you all you need to know. It is predominantly a series of trails in the woods, with well blazed trails and convenient markers at most intersections. Depending on the trails taken you may cross a lightly used railroad track twice, so be certain to check for activity before crossing. A delightful find... More

The trails are easy to hike, and the paths are clear but I think they could be marked better. It's not the most exciting hike or waterfall but it was still nice. The marshland was neat & there were plenty of birds to see! I was disappointed by all the trash around the waterfall though. I wish I had brought... More

This was a somewhat boring trail - well maintained though. The salt water marsh is interesting. Not sure I would walk to the falls again - it's very small and typical. This trail honestly doesn't compare to the many others readily available in Maine. If you are contemplating - there are many others that are far better locally. We wouldn't... More

Love Fore River Sanctuary. Fairly easy hike, some incline and uneven footing, but overall and lovely place. Don't miss Jewell Falls, the only waterfall in Portland.

We enjoyed a nice 2-3 mile hike though the sanctuary, appreciating the well-kept trail, walking from Crest St. to Jewell Falls and back. The Falls were a nice calming oasis in the city.

Good walk, beautiful trees, history of the area, and obviously a determined effort by Portlanders to preserve wildlife.

We parked on Hillcrest. Nicely maintained FOREST trails. Trail from Rowe Ave. narrow, trash filled path though unmaintained field. Overall lovely walking trail, but too many off-leash dogs!! and the "loop" is waaay to long. We didn't even get half way, before turning around.

Open daily dawn to dusk, this pleasant 85-acre (34.4-ha) nature sanctuary is near the 5.7-mile (9.1-km) Fore River. It is at the site of the former 27-lock Cumberland and Oxford Canal (1832-1870), which once connected Portland’s harbor and the Fore River estuary with Sebago Lake and Long Lake. An unpaved 2.0-mile (3.2-km) trail runs through the sanctuary along a former... More
