Unlike a lot of small, mill towns throughout the Northeast, Gardiner downtown seems to be quite active with nearly all downtown storefronts filled and doing business. A great variety of stores, mostly locally owned, which is nice. Make sure you walk down to the riverfront. It offers nice views and has a boardwalk on which to stroll.

Where else can you go where all the buildings are on the Historical register? It is like taking a step back in time but all the shoppes are up to date!

Took a side trip off at the Gardner rest area beautiful little village. Understand that it is beautifully decorated for winter. The main street is one way with parking on both sides of street ample sidewalks so you can view the buildings without standing in street. Restaurants to meet most everyone's taste. Also for those who are organic or vegan... More

Sadly, this mill town doesn't seem to have much to offer. However, there are interesting signs in the windows of some buildings describing the area's history as the top ice producer before refrigeration. Camden Bank featured a history of its building told from the point of view of the building. I want to return to try the restaurants because there... More

My wife and I took time to stroll several blocks of historic downtown Gardiner on Memorial Day (25 May 2015) after we had enjoyed a wonderful lunch at nearby A1 Diner. The architecture of numerous buildings is impressive, and several of them have been refurbished or are in the process of being refurbished. Unfortunately none of the shops were open... More

Since I have lived in this town my whole life, I admit to being subjective. That being said I recognize that the town is trying very hard to improve and reinvent itself with grants to attract new businesses. It wasn't that long ago that every other storefront seemed to be vacant. That is not the case now, however. Restaurants, art... More
