My personal favorite portion of the trip, we took route 1 from Portland to Bar Harbor. Seeing the fishing industry up close and personal was very enlightening, and the way the towns created the mythical harbor town atmosphere was idyllic. Beautiful ocean views and plenty...More

We drove this stretch most recently in Freeport. There is a Roadside Americana stop with the BIF (Big Freeport Indian) at 117 Hwy 1; and all the well-known shopping 3 miles up the road with LL Bean anchoring countless shops and cafes. Traffic does get...More

You will be amazed at the beauty of God's country on your drive through Freeport and other coastal cities along Coastal Highway U. S. 1. The atmosphere is quiet and laid back; very relaxing drive with many places to turn off and snap a photo!

Freeport is a beautiful gem of a place. So busy with the outlets but still that small town appeal. LL Bean is one of the main attractions and you will not be disappointed. You can spend hours in just one of the LL Bean stores.

Not as picturesque as I thought, but it was a nice way to see some more of the state. I also planned to hit many used bookstores, which tend to be off the beaten path. We had many unique experiences; they would have been impossible...More

This is one of my wife's favorite drives. We took the drive a number of years ago and had a great time. In summer it can be somewhat busy, but the traffic was not as bad as I expected. Really a beautiful drive.

Our list of stops starts at Freeport, we always stop at L.L. Bean and also visit some of the other outlet stores. If you're hungry when you go through Wiscasset, stop at Red's Eats (awesome lobster rolls - they're huge... More
