This is a magical experience if you are a nature lover. I have always loved puffins and did my Maine itinerary around the availability of spots on the bold coast charter trip to Machias Seal island. You need to plan ahead because there are only...More

I have loved puffins for as long as I can remember and have always wanted to see them in their own habitat...instead of behind glass at a zoo. I originally booked a cruise 30 yrs ago but ALL cruises were stopped due to people poaching...More

This trip was on my grandson's bucket list for his Maine adventure. He was not disappointed! He had written a paper on Puffins 5 years ago for school and wanted to see one in person. We left in heavy fog and rough seas. Grandma got...More

Seriously don't miss this opportunity! We went two days before the season was over and bird population was much less, but even still we saw hundreds of puffins in their natural environment. The captain does an excellent job at keeping everyone as comfortable as possible...More

Capt. Andy is so knowledgable about Puffins and other birds in the area. This is an experience you must book and book early in the year. You see Puffins up close and in their home. It was like watching a National Geographic series on Puffins.

We had beautiful weather for our trip, which we booked 8 months ahead of time. The water was like glass, allowing no problem landing on the island. Captain Andy was incredibly knowledgable, as was his assistant Tyler, and they were very clear about the expectations...More

I highly recommend joining Captain Andy for the puffin tour to machias seal island. The tour starts from picturesque Cutler Harbor about an hour north of Bar Harbor. Look for a place to stay in Machias and book two days for the puffins in case...More

Best time to see puffers? Also, who might have reservations available for a trip (two adults; one child)?

At this point, usually Jan, Feb, Mar they booking have started. You can call to see if there is anything available. If not, consider these other puffin tours -- you don't land, but you do see them. Google Maine and Project... More

From what I understand the tour allows you to be quite close to the birds -- but I'm still unsure of exactly how close, ie, which lens I should bring if I go next summer. To get a profile of a puffin, would I need something beyond 250mm, or are you really that close? Thanks!

I had a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25. It's a fairly simple zoom compared to the cameras most people had, yet I got fantastic close-ups of the puffins. I also had a separate old flip video camera for taking videos. Again, this... More
