Be advised this is a little ways off Hwy 83 near Oakley, Kansas. If it has rained or going to rain the road can be treacherous. The dry rocky road will limit your speed and could easily damage a windshield if behind or passing another vehicle. Once you get to the "Chalk Pyramids" you will not be disappointed. Amazing formation... More

I love the Monument Rocks, I would always go there with my family when I was little. Even got a few scrapes climbing them! It really shows what Kansas has in stock for us, even history. Well this is coming from a lady who grew up and lives in Oakley, Kansas.

Wanted to find some cool things in KS, found one!! This is such a neat place!! Worth the drive even for a quick visit. I will say the drive was not bad (had overheard some folks talking about it before we went and the cattle guards must be a new concept to them) we made it just fine in a... More

Was road tripping through a few states Summer '16, and the Monument Rocks were the perfect pitstop until we reached our next destination. WOW! Getting there is part of the fun! You drive through a few miles of dirt road, through what we think was privately owned farms. You see the rocks from a far, and as you approach them... More

These rocks lie off the beaten track, in the middle of nowhere, which makes them all the more enticing. They are wind-sheared curtains of limestone rising up from the plains along the route of the old Santa Fe Trail. Look for tiny burrowing owls in the limited foliage along the trail. Come through here with a full tank of gas.

Really interesting sight. Worth a side detour while traveling along 70 in Kansas. Recommend reading about it since no signs at sight and geology is interesting.

Middle of nowhere about 25 miles off I70 on private range land are these beautiful 70 feet tall sedimentary formations of Niobrara chalk created 80 million years ago

My husband found this place on the map and was determined to see it. I was not excited about the side trip. To find it, you leave I-70 at one of the Oakley exits, go south on highway 83, and then 8 miles on Jayhawk, a dirt/gravel road. It isn't a quick trip, so give yourself some time to get... More

Headed east on 83 and followed gps. We seen a sign that said monument to the left, but we kept going per gps. Found out that turn would of saved us about 10 miles. But road wasn't on gps. Dirt road to get there, which concerned us. Thought we were lost because we didn't see any signs. All in all... More

Loved it! A must see when it's not raining! Very interesting chalk/clay formations in the middle of a cow field. Lots of wildlife antelope, turkeys, pheasants, jackrabbits, and the cows were quite the characters too!
