Arrived here on a very wet day. The gift shop was packed out. You could not recognise where the queue started and ended. It may have been due to coach parties, just an assumption. John Wayne's birthplace is a small quaint looking house. Painted white with pretty gardens. You can easily take photos close up to the house. We took... More

I got to visit in the evening with Kiwanis and it was very interesting to see things that were in the John Wayne movies and then to see them in real life. The clothes he wore and the props were outstanding! The gift shop is also quite thorough in their offering as well. If you're a fan of John Wayne... More

If you are a John Wayne fan this is a must see on your bucket list. The women working there were outstanding, very friendly and helpful. We spent two and a half hours just enjoying the period furnished home the Duke was born in, the museum, the cute little theater and the great gift shop. Walked out spending more money... More

My husband and I are both John Wayne fans and visited Winterset several years ago before the museum was built. The property had been purchased but nothing built but the statue. We learned recently that the museum had been finished and it was worth the weekend drive. From the minute that you step out of your car you can see... More

Winterset, Iowa, is a delightful and quaint small city well worth a visit in itself. We visited to see the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum and were not disappointed. The museum, quite new (2013, I believe) is on a corner just a block from the lovely old Winterset downtown. It's located, logically, on John Wayne Drive. The walkway around the... More

This is a good museum that focuses on mostly props. There is very little in the way of personal items or anecdotes. It has also really benefited from a relationship with Maureen O'Hara. The home itself has no personal artifacts. Everything is decorated with period pieces. The film clips were good. Gift shop is really good.

My wife and I stopped here on our second day in Winterset. John Wayne was bigger than life here. The 11 minute movie, museum and home were worth every penny. I hope you enjoy the visit as much as my wife and I did. And, since we stopped here in the off season, we found many souvenirs (Duke stuff and... More

We were heading north to Des Moines when we saw the sign for John Wayne's birthplace and museum. Made a slight detour the next morning and drove over. The museum was small but most interesting.
