This park and the surrounding is the most beautiful city environment that anybody can think of in Colombo. The park is very close to the Parliament, Water’s Edge Hotel, Ape Gama (a traditional village setup), and nature parks and to many restaurants. The park consist of a food court, mini market, an aquarium, jogging track and shopping stalls (changes every or every other day), boat rides, boat restaurants, sea plane bay, boat cycles, a big parking area etc, The area is fast changing every day to be a nature city.

My only worry is that this place is fully crowded from evening to late night.

If you are in or around Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte you could start the day at Diyatha Uyana with a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk to keep you fit. The walk way is of gravel, brick and green path of around 3 kms. The lush greenery and the birds are a feast to eyes while you can breath clean fresh air coming over the Diyawanna Lake. After your morning walk you can enjoy a fresh glass of Kola Kanda or a ginger garlic porridge to clean your system from the food stalls followed by a hearty breakfast of traditional rice or kurakkan pittu which keeps your cholesterol levels down. If you visit during the afternoon of the end of the week you can buy many varieties of plants for your garden. In the evening you can come and laze around with your family and enjoy a dinner at the food stalls which present Chinese, pizza and macaroni or local speciality koththu. Although a bit crowded you can stroll around in the cool sorroundings of Diyawanna Lake.

"Diyatha Uyana" in the Sinhala language (the garden by the water) is the result of a renovation and upgrade of the water's edge located a hop before you reach the country's parliament. This recreational attraction consists of beautiful reservoir banks with interlock paved boardwalk surrounded by ever green grass, flea market style marketplace, an open air food court, plenty of paved parking, a fountain that keeps the kids intrigued with its colorful display of water jets at night, a floating restaurant and an aquarium under the tent.

The water body itself serves an important purpose of draining and storing floodwater. It has been comprehensively dredged for effectiveness and now attracts small sailboats and oarsmen practicing recreational and competitive rowing. Swimming is not advised here and probably not allowed.

This is a busy attraction with people lounging on the grass, families visiting with children while others seem to stop by for supper. Busiest times are evenings with traffic queueing up for parking as the sun sets. It is advisable to avoid this attraction whenever there is a function in the area involving VIP convoys, to avoid unannounced diversions, restrictions on movement and the general inconvenience of panicked policing.

The marketplace offers goods that sell fast and carry items like the Rangala House range of sun-dried tomatoes, tahini etc. The food court offers some diversity but an evident lack of quality control and standards mean you should exercise prudence in your choice.

There is no fee for this popular attraction and it is a good opportunity to observe a subsection of Sri Lankan society. It is safe for families and kids but beware of your belongings. The boardwalk offers the opportunity for a brisk walk or jog while you take turns entertaining the kids.

Enjoy the corniche!

Another scenic perspective of peaceful Diyawanna river eco system, this wonderful recreational park nestled in the Sri Jayawardanapura sanctuary, close by Battaramulla town.
24 x 7 park with different tastes in it, that would enjoy anyone who visit here, including long sandy walking paths for jogging in the morning or in the evening, a dedicated huge children's park for kids, nicely arranged cement benches and tables that suit for lovers and families, an aquarium for those who love them, eye catching lush greenery and cold breeze from Diyawanna river for nature lovers and many more.
Mostly, people used to come here in the evening. The entrance is entirely free. It is facilitated with a spacious vehicle park. It is bit crowed in weekends.
At the very entrance there are some restaurants. The staff is really good. You can enjoy a fruit juice or your evening tea under the shade of Nadun trees. No one is there to disturb you.
Next to this plot, there are agricultural and horticultural shops which provide you a great range of flowering plants, ornamental plants, cacti, orchids, agricultural plants and seeds, Bonsai fertilizers and equipments.
The circular aquarium also located near by which displays uncommon exotic fish species including aligator gars, piranhas and many more.
Since this is a wetland it is home for many a species of aquatic birds. So bird watchers and nature photographers will love this place. You can easily spot waterhens, lap wings, pelicans, eagrets, several species of kingfishers, cormorants, darters and bee eaters.
Another attraction here us floating restaurant which is maintained by Sri Lanka Navy. You can have a night boat ride in which you will enjoy peace in the dusk.

Within the park there is Ape Gama a representation of how Sri Lankan villages used to look and operate. There are some classic buildings showing the skill of previous generations in building shelters from the environment. The village is well laid out and easy to stroll around. there are a number of retail outlets but when we visited NO hard sell. At 700 rupees entry definitely worth it.

Walking paths, jogging track, fresh breeze from the surrounding waterways.

A variety of exotic birds chirping and fishing among the beautiful water plants. Turtles basking in the sunlight, monitor lizards winding their way through the waters.

A good selection of food available at the reasonably priced food court, with plenty of space in the sitting area outside. The "Ranbatha" organic Sri Lankan food outlet is our favourite, with healthy yet tasty rice and curry. Another place in the food court offers traditional herbal drinks and porridges with choice of traditional Sri lankan sweets.

Fish tanks on display, and different vendors plying their wares at a mini market nearby.

A decent plant show / sale on, too.

Well worth a visit, with family for at least 2-3 hours.

Ample parking about 600 m away, with shuttle service for those who prefer not to walk.

A nice and serene place to visit for walking and jogging or just a lazy stroll with family and friends...best time of the day to visit is during the early hours or late evening as the sun is not that hot...plenty of seating area but less shades...not to missed the 3D drawings on the walking path however you need a lot of patience as people tends to hoard the drawings for themselves and will not move. Forget to mention that there are stalls and booths right at the park entrance where they sell food, drinks, ornamental plants, gardenning equipments, fishes and fruits. There is also a Foodcourt where they are selling snacks, drinks and even breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The entrance into this park is free however surprise awaits you at the park entrance...you are NOT ALLOWED to bring in foods, drinks and ciggarettes in the park. Moreover the security personnel there is just point blank and rude. She will ask you to open your bags, your earlier purchases...dig with all her might till the bottom of the bags, unwrap paper wrapped souvenirs and she will searched your bags for these "prohibited" food items without informing what is the purpose for the search at first! No signage or anything and it is just an iron barricade at the entrance.
My local collegues are trying to explain that we do not have items that she is trying to find but she wouldnt listen and everyone watches her frantic search. They even went to the extend of doing random spotcheck of ladies handbags in the park area! They do not respect people's privacy.
So forget about having picnic or snacking within the park area...and they should have proper signages at the park entrance as the securities personnel does not speaks English. I do respect people's shortcomings but please be a little bit courteous and respect people's privacy.
