Sri Jayawardanapura Kote is the new capital of Sri Lanka. This new city has Parliament site and other Goverment Departments. It has been developed beautifully with broad roads.
It is located beyond the Colombo city centre and is the official capital city of Sri Lanka. This is located at the Western Province of Sri Lanka. This city is a large suburb of Colombo City.
We went around this area and enjoyed the lakes and the new building that have come up here. We were explained in detail about the new city by our Tour Guide and we too up some photos too. We however did not stay here as our stay was arranged at Colombo.

Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, commonly known as Kotte, is the official, administrative capital of Sri Lanka. The city can be a little busy and crowded during peek hours . People are very friendly and can be recommended as a place to live .

Good place in Colombo to take your kids . You can enjoy evening with your loved once .
This place was one time the hottest in town and it's very sad to see things have changed drastically over the past few years . Now the place is not so clean it used to be. Not secured specially in late evenings. Even exercise track is hardly maintained.
May be the government is not taking interest on keeping these places clean & secured.
However this the only place as of now for taking kids for a fun for free and for people who want to have a balanced healthy life.

This area houses the new parliament complex which is laid out in a calm and tranquil setting. There are more impressive places to see for most tourists to Sri Lanka.

Sri Jayawardenepura-Kotte is the administrative, and thus the official, capital of Sri Lanka, even though it is really a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital, just 16km away. The Parliament and other government buildings are located here in a peaceful and verdant environment beside the Diyawanna Oya.
Although much of this area has been recently developed, it has an interesting history. In the 13th century, local chieftain Alagakkonara built a fortress (Kotte) on marshy ground at the junction of 2 rivers the Diyawanna Oya and the Kolonnawa Oya. The fortress, 2.5 km2 in area was built of huge laterite blocks and a channel was dug to connect the two rivers so that the fortress was surrounded by a moat. In 1392, after the conquest of the Jaffna Kingdom that united the whole of the island, Prince Sapumal renamed Kotte as 'Sri Jayawardhanapura' (= resplendent city of growing victory) and it became the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kotte and remained so until 1597 when it was ceded to the Portuguese colonials. But the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists chose and developed Colombo as their major port and capital and Sri Jayawardhanapura lost some of its lustre.
In 1930, a building for meetings of the Legislative Council was opened by British Governor Sir Herbert Stanley at Galle Face in Colombo. After independence this building was used successively as the House of Representatives, National State Assembly and Parliament of Sri Lanka until 1981. In 1967 it was decided that a new Parliament Building was needed but for some time there was no immediate agreement on where it should be built. But in 1979, Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa obtained approval to construct the new Parliament Building at Duwa, a 5 hectare island in the Diyawanna Oya in Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte. By relocating the new Parliament Building away from Colombo it was a symbolic break from Sri Lanka’s colonial past.
The Diyawanna Oya was excavated to create a large lake and the Parliament building, designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, was built on an island in the middle of the lake, linked to ‘the mainland’ by a narrow causeway. It was inaugurated on 29 April 1982 by ex-President J. R. Jayewardene. More recent developments in this area include Diyantha Uyana (Park), with a walking/jogging track, built on land reclaimed from the Diyawanna Oya. This park also includes a small island with a few native animals including a fishing cat. Nearby is the Waters Edge Hotel and floating restaurant. At weekends this corner of Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte comes alive with as a busy plant centre, where Colombo’s great and good come to find something to grace their gardens.

Been here many times now, it's a good place to go for a chilled out walk but not to work out because there are many slow walking people. Good food and drinks, really Sri Lankan style so carefully if your not into the spicy side. Good place to even bring your kids around. Enjoy!

This is the capital city of Sri Lanka and it is situated at the western part of the country. About a half an hour from Colombo city you can reach the city of Sri Jayawardanapura. It is the Kingdom of Kotte in the ancient times n now where the national parliament is located at. This is a beautiful, newly renovated city with lots of attractions n waterways.
'Ape gama' is one main attraction that situated right next to the parliamentary complex. It is appreciated by many tourists and locals who wish to learn about the SriLankan culture and traditions. It carries special educational sessions, traditional dancing lessons, stores which has handlum products from traditional weaving, pottery products and many more.
City of Sri Jayawardanapura is one of the eight kingdoms of Sri Lanka. Nature walks and footpaths are all around this city so you can visit many archaeological sites easily. Don't forget to visit the Kotte (another name for Sri Jayawardanapura) museum while you were there.
'Diyatha uyana' is one attraction situated right next to the 'Diyawanna oya', the river that flows around the city. This 'Uyana' or 'the Garden' in English, celebrates many aspects of life through providing a grate place to explore the divers culture in Sri Lanka. This place provide many verity of food stalls representing many cultures, and of course street shopping, garden goods, aquariums and many more SriLankan authentic goods.
Sri Jayawardanapura holds the Colombo's main wetlands, and it holds more than 50 species of animals ranging from small mammals to birds, butterflies, insects and any thing in between in their natural habitats. This is one of the few areas in Sri Lanka you could see both the Fresh water otter and Fishing cat. If you are a fish enthusiast you can see many variations of native fish in the 'oya'. This city at its right is the correct example for a typical Urban Jungle, fusion with urbanisation and nature.
It is always better to time your trip to be at the 'Diyatha uyana' right at the end of the day so you could capture the glimpse of the sunset over the 'Diyawanna oya'. This place has one of the best restaurants in Kotte called 'Boardwalk', you could order a good Steak with a glass of red wine, and most of all enjoy the scenic beauty of the nature at its best.
