As the name implies, the organization is a history museum which collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets objects and images which relate to past people and events of the local community. Founded in 1921, the Society has grown from a small exhibit assembled by the DAR and shown at the Allen County Courthouse to be the largest locally relevant historical museum in northeastern Indiana. The collection has expanded to over 27,000 objects and thousands of images. The History Center now occupies the Old City Building, circa 1893. In addition, the Society acquired the 1827 Chief Richardville house in 1991, and the Barr Street Market in 1991.

The museum is a slice of Allen county history. Don't miss a visit to the former jail in the basement. It's a bit eerie but interesting nonetheless. The Festival of Gingerbread is also well worth making time to see. Creations are crafted by people of all ages and skills. Don't forget to cast your vote for your favorite for the... More

The History Center was very interesting. Since we were there for our nephew's wedding, we didn't have time to tour the entire building. I would like to return at another time. It was a perfect location for the wedding and reception! A lovely celebration 🎉

Family visit to the Ginger Bread Festival with our grandson. Our first time there for the festival event. Very impressive. All the various age groups kinder garden to adult as well as professional chefs. Great to see awards catagorized by groups to be fair. My favorite was the replication of the original Zesto's on Broadway. Detailed Altherr way down the... More

The Gingerbread House contest was in this building 12-3-16 and it included submissions ranging from pre-k up to and including chef's entries. The museum itself had quite a few interesting things to see.

I visited it with my sister, nephew, niece and godson. First, the building is beautiful. Built in the 1800's. It is one of the old city halls. It has many things to see inside. In the basement, it has the old jail cells and upstairs the courtroom has been renovated to it's original colors from the time period. The main... More

We enjoyed a trip to this museum as part of our Fort Wayne vacation. We thought it would be a great way to spend an hour, but we wish we had more time! Exhibits were surprisingly well done and interesting to more than just history buffs

If you have just a short time, and you're into history, this is a quick visit. We saw everything in an hour. Interesting presidential display, railroad moguls from the city, plus the All American Girls Baseball local celebrity display. Also had some of the old jail available to walk through in the basement.

The outside is a lovely building. Inside is a small but nice collection. I wouldn't spend much to get in, but the cost is only $6. We received free admission due to our membership in a historical society elsewhere. Spent only an hour there.

This place is really cool! You will enjoy everything about this place. I came here with a friend, and it was a blast. The old jail is probably my favorite part!
