I go here whenever I can and weather is decent. I always go to the nature center area of the South unit - entering from Sheridan road at Wadsworth road. Parking is free. The "Beach trail" is a quarter mile sandy trail to a less crowded beach on Lake Michigan. The "Dunes trail" (about three miles) is packed small gravel... More

A very nice beach, with some sand and lots of seashells, some large rocks and lots of seagulls. The parking is quite large, and in April it was pretty empty, but probably more crowded during over the Summer. The one thing that is pretty bad is the toilets.

There are several sections to this park. The Hotel/Lodge that is fair at best. The campground is well kept with large camping spots. A very nice pedestrian/bike path winds it's way north of the campground and all the way up to Marina in Winthrop Harbor

Want to see deer or fish? Do you want to get your hiking boots on or your feet wet? You want to see the sun set over the wetlands and trees or the sun rise over a Great Lake? Or, do you want all of this? You can have it and you should!

Illinois State Beach Park is located just over an our north of Chicago City limits. The park is divided in two parts, the North part, and the South part, with the decommissioned Zion Nuclear Power Station dividing the two parts. (we'll get back to that). The North part is trails for hiking and biking, as well as a harbor, and... More

So we closed out the season with a trip to Illinois State Beach Campground. We have camped here many times the last few years. The kids love the trees, the wildlife and the beach. It is a shame that the have let all the buildings along the waterfront fall into such disrepair. Beautiful place though.

Stayed here Tues- Fri and loved the spacious sites. Park was very empty so very enjoyable. Heard waves and crickets all night. Walked along the beach and empty camping loops daily. Don't know if beachside buildings are open in season but they and campground toilets and showers are very run down but kept as clean as can with old buildings.... More

If the warning signs about asbestos found on the beach are not enough to keep you away from this place, then you should check its neighbours on Internet. About one mile to the north on the shore is a shut down nuclear plant with 1100 tons of nuclear waste waiting to be removed from the site. About 1.5 miles to... More

The marvelous weather helped, but my hiking buddy and I and " Camel like doggie" enjoyed the pet friendly ( on a leash ) hiking areas of this renewed State Park - just 5 minutes from WI... Expect for the somewhat bug ridden outdoor toilets the areas were clean and well kept for the beginning of the off season and... More
