To start it would have been at least a 4/5 but sadly the park has a ton of trash on the paths. We picked up what we could, but most was unreachable. I think it is the clientele not the lack of the park trying....More

My friends and I came for the fall foliage and camping. We got more than what we asked for. The trek was super easy. It would be hard if you walk fast because there are stairs. So, pace yourself if you are not fit. The...More

Our friends volunteer there, so we went with them to visit. We'd been there several times before but this was our first visit in a couple years. This is the #1 most visited park in the state. It needs attention but like most things in...More

I've always liked Starved Rock for hiking and as a nice stop off on the bikes. It's very well maintained, clean and an overall safe place. The stairs can be a bit tiresome, but are definitely better than the ones in place before! My only...More

The park is well maintained and very pretty. We came when there was no water, so can't comment on the falls. I suggest that you hike the upper trail first and take the steps down to the river. The river trail does have some damage...More

I love Starved Rock but am always disappointed with not being able to manage the stairs. They are extensive so if you have bad knees, Lovers Leap or Starved Rock itself are really out of possibility. It's a heavily-visited park so you are not feeling...More

Come every year for Burgoo Festival in Utica. In early October so not peak color or crowd. Though campground sells out. Nice spots for tents and RV's, gate closes at 10pm sharp, closed when we leave at 7am in morning. Bathrooms ok. Need more bathroom...More

One of the most beautiful and unique parks in the whole state. Often crowded, but still manageable even on busy days. Great hiking through the park, and always tons of activities throughout the entire year. The canyons are amazing all times of the year.

I had been here before, many times actually, when my kids were young. I went back fearing that it wasn't the same and I was pleased to find that the park was just as magnificent as I remembered. I supervise an ESL Conversation Hour for...More

By far the best state park in Illinois. So many places to explore. Beware the crowds though and try to push out as far as possible on the trails because this place fills up.

I would say no. I have never heard of anyone dog sledding in this area. They cross country ski at Mathieson so maybe a call to the Park Ranger.

I'd also recommend Matthiesen for the size. You will be able to take a shorter walk and still see nice canyons. You probably won't be able to do much with a stroller at any of the parks, so I'd just enjoy the smaller place.
