The canyons were wide open and scenic without all the leaves for our first visit here. We hiked all of the available trails and enjoyed the many changes in elevation that gave us a good workout. The waterfall was marvelous and accessible without much mud or debris to deal with. Some say it is nicer than Starved Rock but I... More

When traveling to this area most people go to Starved Rock State Park - great place, but often crowded. A friend took me to Matthiessen State Park which is very close by, and it was beautiful, peaceful and quiet. The folks we met there were there for an uncrowded hike in a spot that rivaled the other park in scenery.... More

I spent allot of time here in summer when I was in school. The view from my grandmothers front porch was of the fort at Matthiessen across the Vermillion river. We would hike down the hill to the river and wade or swim across depending on how much rain their was that year. The cannons at Matthessen are visually more... More

We were blessed with 60 degrees in February. We came expecting a snowing hike and got just the opposite, but it was perfect. The paths are great and natural. Amazing rock formations. A must see. We also went to Starved Rock. Our experience was great at both, but this was much less busy and more natural that the paths we... More

We stop by here after our hiking adventure at Starved Rock and we were blown away by the canyons. Hardly anyone was there in peak foliage season. We enjoyed this hike better than our starved cave rock hike. The tree roots in the canyon were amazing.

When you drive through almost universally flat central Illinois, you do not expect to find canyons and waterfalls. But Matthiessen State Park has both and more. This park is not as well known as its nearby neighbor Starved Rock, but the hiking here is, in our opinion, much better. My wife and some of our adult children have also been... More

We hiked in the Dells area of the park, which featured a delightful pathway running directly along the stream; crossing multiple times via stepping stones. Not for the clumsy though!

We tried visiting. Checked the website which said it was open. Called the information phone number where a recording said it was open. Drove out of the way to visit this park specifically (40 min extra just for this) only to initially find that the main entrance road was closed for repair. Thought it was odd that this wasn't mentioned... More

lots of stairs, not crowded, waterfall, canyon, might get wet depending on trail, good for single hikers or small groups. best to bring your own refreshments
