After six hours of travel from Djibouti City, half of it on dirt tracks passable only by a Land Cruiser or similar vehicle, one would hope there is something to see. Although November is not flamingo season at Lake Abbe, the geology is unique and...More

Absolutely loved my trip to Lake Abbe. The journey there is not the most interesting, but once you catch first sight of those chimneys it really picks up in terms of the scenery. Its a very odd landscape and it was fantastic to see. The...More

The Good: Lac Abbe and the chimneys and the sights along the way on the looong offroad drive. The views of the nomad children returning home with their goats and donkeys and camels in sunset against the backdrop of steaming limestone chimneys and hot springs.....More

We went here in July 2017 as part of a package tour. The temperature was around 45 degrees C. The camp itself was nice enough with huts for travelers. It takes around 3 hours off road to get to this location. On the way you...More

Landscape of another world. The chimneys in stark contrast to the surrounding desert seem almost surreal. We spent the night in the campground to enjoy the sunset and following morning sunrise. Wow! We were told "Return of the Planet of the Apes " was filmed...More

It's great place to see. The lake, chymneys, flamingoes, scenery etc. You also get picture of the nomad lifestyle and culture. Nice to stay close to lake in nomad family's place. Bit of a drive from Djibouti city, but worth it!

Worth the bumpy road to see such amazing geothermal topography! Stayed the night in a "local" hut which was an experience that went along with a wonderful two days. East to explore on your own, but best to have a native do the driving. If...More
