The West Coast trail is an icon of the hiking / backpacking community in Canada. I've completed the trail 4 times in 1983, 86, 99 and 2006, first two with my father, the last two with my children when the youngest to go at the...More

I hiked the WCT more than 30 years ago with another university student. It was the most grueling and physically challenging hike of my life. I recall we took the original legendary MV Lady Rose from Port Alberni to Bamfield. We had chosen to start...More

If your mind can easily adjust to all trail conditions and weather. Your generally fit then you will love this trail. Did it at slow pace in 6 days with 4 days of rain. If you feel that this is still better than at home....More

You can do the full trail or just parts of it. It is a daunting trek and you should be fully prepared for what you are getting into. There are some easy parts but there are some very challenging parts, too. The nature, however, is...More

I did this trail last summer in 5 days and it is among my best experiences. It is a challenging hike but not as difficult, if you feel you are not in good shape plan for 7 days+ and you should be fine. I started...More

This was the first time I had backpacked more than 2 days. I'm in decent shape for a mid thirties guy, and this tested my limits physically. Many people each year have to be evacuated or choose to boat out at the halfway point. I...More

This is my second year doing the WCT. Year 1 was drought and no mud holes. It was a piece of cake compare to this year even though at the time I thought it was gruelling. The mud and the rain this year multiplied that...More

I'd have to agree with one of the comments around "Less Trail, More Obstacle Course". If you are looking for a nice backpacking trip to see some lovely outdoors this shouldn't be your first choice. If you are looking for a challenging hike in muddy,...More

The West Coast Trail is less of a trail and more of a multi-day, muddy, treacherous, obstacle course punctuated by campgrounds and beaches. It is not an easy trek and should not be taken lightly or without serious planning. There are beautiful sections and mind...More

I've hiked the Rockwall in BC. How would it compare to the intensity of the WCT?

I've hiked both and the WCT was much more difficult in my opinion. But the Rockwell was a better hike overall given the beautiful scenery. The WTC is more challenging because of: (1) the challenging trail; (2) the weather... More

Hi there - are there any great tour operators or guides that operate on the WCT? We are a group of girls (some would say ladies) who would love to do the hike with a touch of luxury and a glass of wine :) Thanks

I'm interested in knowing more about the ladders. If we go from south to north, I understand we're going down more laddwes than up. Is that right? Is it easier going down a ladder or up?

Hi, ChrisofCalgary! It's not quite so. Meaning that what goes up must come down. I would say it's quite equal. A lot of people decide to go from the north just because there are less ladders and a false idea that your... More
