historical village on the hills of southern Italy
Apr 2014 • Friends
very nice historical part of the village with lots of ancient buildings. The weather is sometimes unpredictable due to its location on a hilltop ;-) There are many unexpected historical events coining this village.

An "Eagle's Nest"
Horace the poet described Acerenza as an Eagle's Nest and as you approach the city from any direction you will understand why. The walled city sits on a hill top with a commanding view of the surrounding countryside.

This city, the seat of an Archbishop for hundreds of years, has seen more prosperous times but that may be changing. Recently a self portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci has been found in the city. It has recently been on display in nearby Vaglio Basilicata.

The centro storico is interesting to walk around and the people are very friendly. You will find the imposing Cattedrale dell'Assunta e di S Canio a worthy visit. The tower is open for small groups by appointment. From the city walls you can see as far as the Adriatic coast on a clear day.

The drive to Acerenza is a windy trip but the scenery along the way and the destination is worth the effort.
