About Spirit of Peoria - Day Tours
The Spirit of Peoria is an authentic paddlewheel driven vessel. The Spirit has no props or thrusters, and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel gensets, producing 700 kilowatts combined in 208 volt 3-phase voltage. The power is rectified using railroad-style rectifiers, probably from a GM GP38. The DC voltage goes to two traction engines, also from a GM locomotive, which drive the paddlewheel via two forty-foot-long by one-foot-wide chains. This allows the boat to be comparatively fast and efficient, burning approximately 15 gallons (57L) of diesel fuel an hour, with a top speed of over 15 mph (24 km/h). Its shallow draft of 4' enables the Spirit to land in just about any river town. Boarding is by 30' long boarding stages The boat is owned and captained by G. Alex Grieves, and co-captained by Alice Grady and Dylan Masonholder. It routinely travels up and down the Illinois River and Mississippi River.

This 90-minute sightseeing cruise was fun and informative. It was a hot, humid day, so they allowed us to board as soon as we got our tickets. We settled into seats in the shade and enjoyed the river breeze until time to start. An interesting commentary over the speakers shared information about the past and present of that short stretch of the river....most was on the west side, which is where our seats were. The crew members were friendly and helpful. The tickets are very reasonable, and the tour well worth the money. Overall very good.

We were on a dixie land jazz tour and the whole experience was excellent. First it was well organized and each passenger or group of passengers was assigned seating. As the boat left the dock we went in order to the buffet for an tasty lunch of beef, beans, scalloped potatoes, etc. The band then began to play. After the band took a break most people went out to explore the boat. My wife and found seating near the front and let the breeze cool us of a warm day.

Did date night with the hubby and enjoyed live music provided by a local band, Za Funk. Hubby and I enjoyed the summer sunset as we made our way leisurely up the Illinois River. I found a pair of wooden rocking chairs on the top deck and just sat enjoying my drink and the cool evening breeze. We left our teenage daughters at home, but I think they would have also enjoyed it had we invited them along. I love the historical treasure that is The Spirit of Peoria!

We just had the pleasure to take the Mother’s Day Lunch cruise and what a treat it was! My Mother In Law just left me a voicemail stating it was the best Mother’s Day she ever has had. We had a party of 10 and sat at a nice table on the 1st Deck. The food was all prepared on the boat by a lovely chef (who proceeded to let our girls tour the kitchen!). We ate a wonderful salad, fruit, yummy corn muffin, cheesy potatoes, ham, beef pot pie and awesome desserts. The staff was so nice and attentive! The cruise on the river was delightful. Restrooms were very clean and the music entertainment was very nice! We all had such a wonderful afternoon and we feel so lucky to have this as a source of entertainment in Peoria. Highly recommend! We will all be back!

The riverboat was fun, but cold. The trip on the Illinois River was about 90 minutes. One of the negatives of the trip was that it was narrated, but the speakers were poor. We had to stand by the speaker to hear what was being said. We were also hoping to go downstream, past the city skyscrapers and hear about that area. The northern area had very little see. Maybe the reason for not heading downstream was because it was sooo windy and cold.
