Wild camping - beautiful but beware of ticks
Jun 2019 • Couples
I went to Utö over the Midsummer weekend (June), and hiked down south to Ålö (approx 2 hours). Here I wild camped on a few of the many deserted beaches. Saw a few people at Storsand Beach, but hardly anyone on the walking trails or at the other smaller bays. Anywhere on the southern coast along the trail, there are lots of places to set up camp and light fires in the designated areas. Google the map you will see there are water sources (wells), some rubbish bins, and one bathroom. Scenery is beautiful (rocky shores, sandy beaches, forests, birdlife, wetlands etc).

BEWARE - TICKS!!! After the first day, I found about 15-20 ticks all over my arms and legs. And when I woke up the next day, there were many on the tent trying to get inside!!!

The hiking trail was surprisingly difficult, quite tricky in some places, particularly on the northern side.

There is a restaurant near Ålö dock, it looked very cute, unfortunately closed when I was there.

To get there is fairly simple. Either take the commuter train (Pendeltag) from Stockholm Central to Nynashamn and then Waxholmbolaget ferry across to Ålö. Or you can take a Pendeltag from Central to Västerhaninge, then catch the bus to Årsta and finally a ferry across to Utö.

Personal super gem disclosed!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Several visitors have rightly lauded these islands' beaches, restaurants, bike tracks, etc. I also recommend the very good restaurant Rånökällan on Rånö, so far with no entry on Tripadvisor. Nice cottages to rent on Rånö. And with some hesitation I disclose the finest gem of all: Tymarstugan. Accessible only by a small outboard motor boat (included in the rent). On a small promontory on southernmost Ålö. A Sandy bay on one side, the horizon on the other. Fabulous place! (spent one-two weeks there for twenty years).

Best beaches in Archipelago. Perfect Island Living beautiful.
Sep 2015 • Friends
Sailing bliss as a destination. The main village has great evening entertainment live music and good couple of restaurants and more friendly nicer crowd than Sandhamn. The Bakery is a legend and at 2 am is open to the most amazing FRESH sandwiches after a few beers. The entire Island is made for cycling and would make a perfect destination with a family. The beaches are a 45 min cycle away on the far side of the Island.

Hidden Gem of island
May 2015 • Couples
Rano is an medium sized island that is part of the archipelago foundation nature reserves close to Nynäshamn and Utö. Its reached on the Uto Express ferry from Nynashamn and is the second to last stop, a journey of about 45 minutes. The ferry connects well with the commuter train from Stockholm. We stayed at the campground 1.2km from the ferry quay. The campground is basic... just an open area, a fresh water well and some outhouse toilets, but it is a hidden gem and one of the nicer places we've camped. This is due to the luxurious grass than makes up the campground, making it particularly soft. We spotted deer on the campsite and also several times while walking the paths. There is a working farm and we saw baby lambs and calves in May. Near the ferry terminal there are quite a few cabins that can be rented from the end of April. At the cabins there are showers and a sauna. There is a well stocked store with food, some necessities. The store also sells beer and fresh vegetables. Plus there is a bar/ restaurant, although this is only open from late June to mid August. The store was open in early May when we went. You can hike all over the island and there are small motorboats for rent. Its a great place if you want to experience a local's type of archipelago. To the south on Norro there are family cottages (you can walk there) and a couple of anchorages. if you are an explorer you should like Rånö.
