This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

As with all historic sights - you should visit if in the area. The house furniture is mostly original to the Grants. That, in itself, is unique.

Interesting and informative tour of a historic landmark and figure. Some really interesting art pieces. Could use a little more info about Grant himself.

I’m a Southerner thru and thu!! But visiting the enemies home was interesting! I’m always open to learn and experience the mid 1800s and this tour certainly delivered!! Highly recommend.

Nice tour of the house with knowledgeable docents that can answer your questions. Operations are maintained by donations at the entrance door. It is owned by the State of Illinois; they could spend a little more money on it. Very worthwhile.

Donations...but may as well be a charge as you could get some stink eye for not throwing anything in the pot.
