This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

Met our expectations, although the tour could have been longer. Well maintained. A more extensive gift shop is needed.

It was an easy sell for me since I'm kind of a history nerd and a Grant fan, but my girlfriend, who went as a favor to me, found it "surprisingly enjoyable." Our docent was delightful. The home was beautiful and contained many more original...More

I didn't know much about Grant before this tour, so I appreciated the knowledge of the docent. In less than an hour you can learn his family's history and see how they lived.

Beautiful home full of history. U.S. Grant and his family lived in this home after the war. It is beautifully taken care of and full of artifacts from the Grants time here.

I'm really glad I decided to stop here and walk through. We had a very knowledgable tour guide. There is a lot to read about and look at, I did feel rushed because my group sped through the rooms. My boyfriend and I let the...More

Knowledgeable tour guide. Beautiful home and surrounding landscape (air conditioned). Loved hearing about Grant, his children and most notably, his wife Julia. Not a super long tour and you can wander on your own for part of it. For a $5 donation this is a...More

I'm thinking of taking my 91-year-old mother to Galena for a few days. She is healthy and does get around okay, but I saw the photo with all of the stairs to the Grant home and I don't think she can do all of those stairs. Is there another entrance into the building that you saw?

There are a number of steps from the street below. There is a very small parking lot next to the building next door or you could go s drop off. The stairs inside the house to the second floor are narrow and slightly steep... More
