The founders, movers, and shakers of Chicago are all buried here. Louis Sullivan designed at least two of the mausoleums, and he's buried here, too. So are Potter Palmer and his wife, Bertha. George Pullman. Marshall Field. Ruth Page. Mies van der Rohe. Mr. Cub himself, Ernie Banks, is buried here. The list goes on and on. Grab a walking... More

Graceland is Chicago's finest examples of what are known as "Rural" cemeteries (cemeteries created from roughly the 1830s to the 1870s in places away from city cores -- hence the term "rural' -- and featuring beautiful landscapes and magnificent funerary architecture). Generally, these are safe places to visit as they are well maintained and heavily visited, and Graceland is no... More

As Pere Lachaise is to Paris, Graceland is to Chicago. The resting place for the movers and shakers and entrepreneurs of their day. Most amazing monumental work and statues and buildings. Of course this is also THE place to see Squirrels at play. Do some research before you go and make sure you pick up a map.

The cemetery contains the most impressive monuments and mausoleums as well as burial sites for some famous people like Ernie Banks.

Graceland is a peaceful oasis in the city, but even more importantly, it is the burial place of many of the people who helped make Chicago great, such as Parker Palmer and Marshall Field, plus architects like Mies Van Der Rohe and others. The Chicago Architecture Foundation tour of Graceland is very informative.

The creativity and beauty of this cemetery is really one of a kind. Again we had Silvie from the Architectural Foundation of Chicago giving the tour. She is so knowledgeable about the historic value of the cemetery and the inhabitants. It is beautiful and has become an arborists dream. The surroundings are so peaceful, this would be a wonderful final... More

Graceland Cemetery is not a typical sightseeing choice, but is truly worthwhile for those looking for something off of the beaten path. The lush landscaping, stunning grave markers, and private mausoleums are breathtaking. Some of the mausoleums and grave markers are the work of the Victorian era's best sculptors and architects. In fact, the cemetery's Architect's Corner contains the remains... More

I highly recommend taking a couple of hours to stroll around this beautiful place. Unfortunately we didn't realize they close at 4:30 so we missed out on a lot. And when you're done there's plenty of shopping and good food along Southport Ave on you way back to the subway.
