This is an amazing library! Though it's research only if you have a specific project this resource is amazing. Be aware this is not a library that you can browse through books, or old artifacts. This is a library where you would need to go in first and research what might be available and once you're at the library you... More

I was really impressed by this research library. They had an 1889 magazine I was looking for. The security officer and library staff were super friendly and helpful. This is an amazing library.

I came for the Shakepeare exhibit and it was my first visit to this non-circulating research library. I had some passing knowledge of the library prior to my visit and I had visited their website prior to my trip and had also applied for my readers card ahead of time. I was a little surprised when I entered the building... More

I thought it just focused on Western civilization, but actually has material in the book collection and in the bookstore on Native Americans, African-Americans, and a surprise Filipino-Americans. Packed 2-level bookstore includes book-related gifts that span the spectrum from quirky to fun to classy: Shakespeare action figure! Pack of candy with a Shakespearean insult wrapped around each one! Edgar Allan... More

Whether you are coming here to research or just to browse, this library has an impressive Humanities collection. I took the tour at 10.30 local time on a Sat and found this to be very informative and very interesting. The guide taking us around was the descendant of one of the founders of the library and gave an extremely interesting... More

Tip. A short walk from Bloomingdales on North Michigan for those who wish to combine culture with shopping. A magnificent building with a fascinating little book store. On our visit there was a compelling display about civil wrongs and civil rights in Chicago’s history that was most informative, if disconcerting. The Newberry Medal influenced some of my childhood reading and... More

Just visiting so nothing too specific - very beautiful building. There is an exhibit that focuses on African Americans in Chicago from the Civil War to today, it is quite well done. Free and easy to visit this.

Staying in Gold Coast

Neighbourhood Profile
Gold Coast
Located just north of The Loop, Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most affluent and popular neighborhoods. The original Playboy, Hugh Hefner, once had a mansion here. In addition to prestigious hotels, historic mansions and luxury high-rise apartments, you’ll also find upscale specialty boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. Walk along Oak Street for your shopping fix and dance through the night along Rush Street. The Newberry Library is also a great stop to check out noteworthy exhibits and rare book collections.
