The McLean County Museum of History traces its roots back to 1892, the year the McLean County Historical Society was founded. It is a nationally accredited award winning museum with five permanent exhibit galleries and two rotating galleries. The Museum is located in the historic 1903 McLean County Courthouse that includes an architectural tour throughout the building. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, and FREE for children and students with I.D. This educational institution is dedicated to telling the rich story of McLean County through programs which serve people of all ages. The Museum preserves 19,000 objects, makes available more than 11,500 rare and hard to find reference books, manages 1,700 feet of historical papers and images in its archives. It also houses the new Cruisin' with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center and the McLean County Genealogical Society. Tuesdays are FREE days.

This museum is a must. The free visitors center is there and the museum is very much worth the small fee they charged us. We were there three hours...and I think we could have stayed all day! Lots of hands on exhibits. Lots of fun...More

We are pleased you enjoyed your time with us. Your admission supports the work we do as a nonprofit museum, so thank you for the kind words and helpful review. Come see us again when new exhibits open in 2018!

The fact that the McLean County Museum of History was once the old courthouse speaks volumes of its history and legacy. The Lincoln statue on the outside has historic value because, of course, Lincoln practiced law in Bloomington. The exhibits from People and Places are...More

We were very surprised with this Museum. It is in the old courthouse which architecturally is beautiful from the marble stairs to the tiny mosaic tiles on the floors and the beautiful rotunda. We spent about an hour roaming around and reading the displays. We...More

This is a nice museum as it is in an actual old courthouse, not just another building. That makes the exhibits more plausible. Of course, there was a lot about Lincoln (he practiced law here), and a very good explanation of farming corn. Corn is...More

Our original intention when stopping here was just to see the Route 66 portion on the lower floor. But ... when we found out that Tuesday's were free to tour the museum .. well - we had to! And we weren't disappointed. There is a...More

It was relatively interesting but only takes 30 minutes to see most everything. The building is very pretty and the surrounding grounds have some historical buildings. I however would not drive too far just to see this museum.

The ground floor is where you enter. That floor is dedicated to Route 66 memorabilia and a gift shop. There were two short videos. You can then explore the remaining floors. My teenagers had the best time in the jail cell on the "first" floor....More

This museum is ok. Not all of the exhibits are related to McLean County Illinois. The other big issue is that a good deal of the exhibits are not taken care of very well. A troue museum with a curator would not let exbibits look...More

Thanks for leaving a review. It is true we are in the middle of a major renovation, so the final two exhibit galleries that are showing their age will be updated. As a small nonprofit museum, we have been raising $3 million to get this...More
