This was a MUCH MUCH harder and longer hike than reflected in any of the reviews we ready prior to going. The scenery is amazing, truly beautiful surroundings. However, we hiked for an hour and a half and finally decided to turn around before we even found the springs. There are no markers to alert you if you're even close. The hike is so long we started to think we went the wrong way. It's pretty challenging, mostly uphill. Luckily we had a beautiful day and were prepared for a hike w/snacks and water and appropriate clothing. I would not recommend to anyone who has any physical limitations or is not very fit.

This part of the trip was one of our best experiences in Iceland and it was well worth the long hike. Because it is not an actual attraction there is no website, phone, and it never closes so people go there at all hours. The parking lot is large enough for everyone. Just follow the trail. It's about 70 minutes there and 60 minutes back. You will see bubbling mud and sulfur pits along the way. The stream goes through several "pools". The top one has the hottest water and the one at the bottom has the coolest water. Choose the "pool" you like best. There are no restrooms or charging stations. Bring towels, water and snacks. Take trash home with you. Enjoy the stream and views.

The hike to the river was made more enjoyable by the snow covered landscape, and also more challenging for those who don’t like heights on some of the upper sections where the path was completely covered. A little persistence was rewarded by great views and a sense of achievement when arriving at the river.
The air temperature being around freezing made the water more inviting. Although an upper section of the river was closed there was still plenty of room for us and fellow hikers. A quick change behind the screens and dash to the warm and fairly fast flowing water was required. Once in, the water and air around was warm and it was comfortable lying on the river bed, stones, and looking about at the snow covered valley. After changing the return hike was enjoyable and taken together this felt like a really authentic experience rounded off with a coffee in the well stocked shop/cafeteria at the base of the walk.

Amazing experience. Park in the visitors centre - charges apply. Lovely coffee shop with lovely food, with toilet. Then it was a good hour's hike - I'm not that fit, but found it OK. Plenty of stops to admire the view! Easy to follow the path. Then once we got there we used the small panels to change (we have changing towels, but even if we didn't nobody cared!). We got in at the top and it burnt our feet - literally, and then realised we could go further down where it was cooler. It was amazing lying in the river, completely warm. When we got out, as our bodies were warm, changing back into our clothes wasn't too bad! I wish I'd taken flip flops as walking on the stones in the river was difficult but I have delicate feet!!! Don't let the walk up put you off - it was amazing. Possibly the best thing we did in Iceland.

Beautiful setting, a short hike up the trail approx. 4km each way to a thermal river has to be seen to be believed! Take your own towels. Also swim shoes as the riverbed is rocky but not essential. Small cafe at the bottom to fuel up before the hike!

Parking is done via the app so charges you when you leave.

It’s a decent hike up, we were glad we had our hiking boots. River was gorgeous, lots of pools, gets hotter as you go higher. We had a lot of stretches to ourselves. Flies on the way up weren’t awesome so would recommend a bug net. As we left the trail was getting slammin busy so would recommend getting there early. We hit the trail at 8 or so and were really happy with how quiet it was.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland! I will complain about the parking lot though! Parking was easy/fine but I had downloaded the Parka app before our trip and either used that or would pay at a booth at every other attraction. We arrived at the hot springs to find there was no option to pay for parking other than downloading another app called Easy Park. It said there was free wifi in the cafe but I had a lot of issues getting it to download and had to have my husband try on his phone because it froze on my phone and wouldn't download. It was just annoying after having already set up a different parking app. They charged by hour here rather than a flat fee. Otherwise we loved this stop! It is 2.5 miles UPHILL though so be ready for it! It's pretty steep at the beginning. The views are spectacular and it levels off a bit and isn't quite as steep but it doesn't ever really stop being an uphill climb. It's so worth it when you get there though! There isn't much privacy for changing so be warned. There are a few wooden partitions you can kind of hide behind but just think you're in Europe! Be European! The hot springs was DELIGHTFUL after the hard hike up. We loved every minute of it. The hike back down is much easier however the bugs were TERRIBLE on the way down. The midges drove us crazy on the way down. Ive heard of people buying head nets for the midges in other parts of Iceland and you could definitely use it here on the way down. For some reason they didn't bother us on the way up. We loved this spot!

A great uphill hike and great reward with the hot springs above.
Parking at the bottom was easy, had free wifi so was able to download the app and pay easily (they scan you plate on the way in and out and generate charge after you leave, reasonable rates, don't recall exactly price!) Bathrooms available at building by parking lot, and then no more when depart, good to keep in mind. Cute restaurant and small gift shop there too. We over dressed, had to carry a lot of layers as it is a big uphill trek and we warmed up quickly. Lots of sheep, streams and steam vents to see along the way. Would definitely recommend bringing water shoes, the rocks are a bit hard to walk on barefoot when in the springs. We spent probably 1hr in the springs, which was perfect. We went all the way to the top point available to go in (boardwalk ends and "closed" sign at end) and then worked our way back a little to temp we liked (hottest at top)--really interesting where the cool stream feds into the hot spring stream, nice if you get too hot!

The hike up to the hot springs took about an hour and a half. There is quite a lot of uphill terrain, but paths are very well maintain, so not difficult. We had fog and drizzling rain, on the way up. Thee is a beautiful waterfall on the way. Once you reach the hot springs there are a few walls that we used to change behind (but they don’t offer much privacy). Bring a plastic bag to keep your clothing dry, as it’s windy and there is nowhere to keep you items from blowing on the ground. The water is warm enough to be comfortable and relaxing but not so warm that you couldn’t stay and relax for an hour. The hike back took about half the time.

This was such an amazing hike! It can be challenging though. It took us 1 hour to get to the hot springs (most of which is all uphill) but then we soaked in the hot springs (it is quite shallow and rocky, so it hurts to walk in - I wish I had brought water shoes). It was very relaxing though. It did start to rain so changing back into our clothes was quite cold. There are no change rooms, just a couple wooden structures to go on the other side of. The hike down took about 45 mins. The scenery was beautiful and it was awesome to go in the hot springs after a hike up to the top - I would definitely recommend!
