Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful park. Friendly staff. I’m going to return and spend more time exploring, swimming, and riding on the gorgeous bike path.

Do not underestimate the mosquito reviews. Even with the use of deet I have 20+ bites and we left a day early. Also got a mouse in our trailer so that’s fun….otherwise the junior ranger program at the visitor center was great and night swimming at rocky point was the highlight. Sites are small and close together.

Hell hole- mosquito infested. Booked one night passing through for nice place to walk our dogs while traveling home but no amount of repellent could have made it possible to be outside. Camp host said it had even been worse. Spent several hours killing the bugs that got in the camper just from opening the door to get in and out of the camper. Received email water may be off but reality is it had been off for weeks and wasn’t expected to be back on for several more weeks. Left at 5:30 am. Could not pay me to stay in this park.

We camped two weeks before Memorial Day weekend, and the place was already near capacity. We were concerned that the smoke coming down from the Canada forest fires would be an issue, but happily it was not (except for stargazing). The computer system was down most of the time we were there, so the visitor center was hardly ever open. Once we checked, and it was open, and the employees were very nice and friendly. The campsites were clean and well maintained, and the hot showers are free! The bike trail is nearby, and was lovely to ride. It's level enough (except on the bridge) for all. We rode to Harrison, had lunch at the bar/restaurant on the water and back.

Hitching up the trailer, we had our encounter with the mosquito horde. I think they were attracted to the exhaust on the truck; anyway, it was the fastest hitch-up I've ever done! We were in site 50, which had power and water hook-ups, butt the reservation website didn't mention the water was available, so we filled our tank unnecessarily on the way in. There is also a potable water hose at the dump station at the front of the site.

Stopped by the Visitor Center to get information on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. The staff there was extremely helpful and friendly. The center is very nice, has many informational brochures, and clean bathrooms! The only problem I had was getting there! My GPS didn't take me to the correct place, so I relied on road signs. There was one sign on Rt 5 that identified the Heyburn State Park Visitor Center as being "straight ahead" -- but no subsequent sign that said to turn onto Chatcolet Road (which I only later found out). The Center is also known as the Rick Brown Memorial Visitors Center. (Perhaps I need to get a better GPS!). Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone!

We stayed 4 days in the Rocky Point Cottage, an old cabin. Very nicely painted interior for the very old 1930 remodeled and restored house cabin called Rocky Point Cottage. Problem is that Heyburn State Park knows how old and poorly restored this cottage is so they do not show photos inside the cottage. Why? The outside cottage photo is old (will discuss later). Impressed with cooking on a new stove and washing in a new washer! We thought the cottage was pretty clean first walking in, but walking in on the kitchen floor was sticky and dirty. A little while later the same evening opening the kitchen drawers (all 8 of them) had mouse poops scattered in everyone & on/around the utensils! I was livid and in a panic! I took photos and cleaned every single piece of silverware, cooking utensil, plate, bowls, pots and pans; everything! It took me close to 3 - 4 hours to wash everything. It took me another hour to sweep and mop the sticky floor. The next morning I left a message about the house having mice at the State Park office and finally received a call back close to noon. The park rangers delivered and placed these 2 sticky tray mouse catchers into the bottom of a drawer and the back of kitchen counter behind the toaster. The next morning there were mice poops again on the stove and the kitchen counter. I know it is a cabin, but we've stayed in well over 2 dozen cabins in our travels (state parks and private) they are always cleaned of rodent activity and of spiders! This cabin was riddled with spiders. I am still waking up with nightmares after getting up early and walking into a fully made spider web in the doorway from our bedroom to the living room the first morning we were there! The spider web was made through the night!
I asked our son to bring some indoor spider spray with him to the house (I used soapy water to go over the counters and rewash all the utensils in very hot Lysol liquid in water for disinfecting using safety health instructions). The box for the mouse sticky trays stated there is no scent of food or poison in the sticky goo. After 2 nights, still poop all over the counter and no mice/mouse in these passive traps, my husband told me to place a marshmallow into one tray and a piece of cheese in middle of the other. The 3rd and last morning, there was no mouse poop on the counters, but interestingly I baked cookies in the oven the night before. Perhaps this drove away the rodents for a day or two. FYI we cleaned and took photos of this place leaving it cleaner than we arrived!
Our trip was pretty much ruined by our experience staying in one of their cabins there. Our son listened his first night there that the walls and above crawl space of our cabin, he could hear them all night long, the sound of mice scurrying around and squeaking. The first morning, we noticed that there were some mouse droppings along the interior walls as well as what was found inside the drawers the night before. These types of conditions aren't sanitary. But if you don't mind mice and spiders this is your 'gem of a cabin' to stay!

Nice camp site -- just better maintenance needed -- rather than camp personnel -- just driving around in trucks !!

More places to drop off garbage --more cans needed -- why not in different places on site -- the park personnel seem to have time to drive everywhere -- they could be picking up garbage from cans !!

This was a great campground with full hook up sites. Bathrooms/showers were very clean. Nice hiking and biking trails nearby. We were in the Hawley's Landing campground. There is some road and train noise but it didn't affect us. Staff was very helpful whenever we stopped to ask questions. Would definitely stay here again if in this area.

This is our favorite camping site in the Coeur D'Alene-Moscow-Lewiston area, a nice distance from town. It helpfully offers multiple campgrounds for people who want different experiences; the Hawley Landing campground is louder and busier and closer to the lake, while Chatcolet is more isolated and quiet (but doesn't accommodate large trailers/RVs). We haven't stayed in the third, no-reservations campsite.
Specifics on some good spots to shoot for for tent campers:
In Hawley's Landing, we've stayed in tent spots 9, 10, and 3. Spots 5-10 are all walk-ins in the same somewhat open area and can be awkwardly close to each other; 10 and 5 are the most private, but 10 can be very windy. 8 and 10 have the bests lake view. 1-4 are very nice and quite private, especially 3. I don't recommend tenting on either of the other loops, they're quite crowded with large RVs.
In Chatcolet, pay close attention to the stated tent pad sizes - many of the spots have (by modern standards) very small areas flat enough for tents. Nearly every spot makes up for it with snug, private settings or spectacular views. We love spots 131 and 133 especially - 131 does not have as much of a view as the map suggests, but is remarkably cozy. We were able to just barely squeeze a 10'-square tent into 131.
Overall, both campgrounds have great access to the lake and local trails, and which is better for you is a function of your personal tastes.

We stayed 3 nights in the Benewah campground. Trees and terrain created privacy, bathrooms were very clean and free hot showers!!

We were in a camper van that required no hook ups and we backed into our spot easily. We had a citronella candle that kept the bugs away. We were out biking every day. Most campers had kayaks or boats and were on the lake.

This is a big state park with multiple campgrounds. We drove around to access the Trail of the Coeur d’Alene via another entrance.

Tip – Conkling Marina to the NW along the lake serves a great breakfast!
