A friend and I decided last night to drive within our 5km to drive out here as we were planning on maybe when things opened again. An afternoon tea for a big birthday she has coming up. However it being darker and we were having the chats, we accidentally took a wrong turn and ended on private property. Now were we to know? No. Were there signs? No. We were just trying to see was there a sign or information for tea rooms. We turned around and decided we would come back in daylight. When suddenly there was a lady standing out shining a torch in our faces. I explained we took a wrong turn. Very apologetic. Instead of asking were we ok? What were we looking for? We were made feel like we were very dodgy characters and how dare we make a mistake. Something about her husband to intimidate us as well! Well. If they've anything to do with the castle. Won't be going there for said birthday. Left feeling stupid and our mood was ruined. I understand some people are causing problems but God forbid you make a mistake or whatever. Put up signs or gates and claiming private property and maybe you won't have the issue!!

Good guided tour, plenty of history and interesting artefacts. Gardens are also lovely. Basement of the castle for me was a bit weird, you'll see what I mean!

An amazing driveway leads to the old castle, to which a rambling house has been added. There are lots of peacocks and chickens walking around in the courtyard. It has an attractive garden and a cafe for somes coffees and cake. The house is actually not huge, and is very eccentric. The guide is a descendent of the family who orignally build the castle! She gave a great and colourful story of the house and the family.

Well worth a visit. Fantastic wild playground. Interesting architecture. You'd never expect to find a castle like this in a little Carlow village. The grapes in the greenhouse were amazing.

The only word that describes our stay in Huntington Castle is “Magical”! It is like a living museum filled with objects of beauty and history. Alex, Claire and their lovely family are the custodians of Huntington and our stay exceeded our expectations in terms of comfort and hospitality. If you are looking for an alternative to a purely commercial venture - this is for you. Alex’s younger brother Harry couldn’t have been more charming - Thank you and we will be back. Grace & John
