Viguzzolo has a beautiful little romanic church named Pieve, consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta, which was probably built in about the first half of the eleventh century. This simple romanic basilica, oriented from west to east, is divided into three naves, that end with semicircular apses and the typical covering of churches with monocuspidate and lateral spur. Unfortunately the only remaining trace of the fresco is on the central apse, probably painted in the eleventh century, too. It shows only two feet and the clothing: possibly a Pantocratic Christ Person between two saints: S. Cosma and S. Damiano. The crypt extends under the larger apse to the middle of the nave; it was completely built with bricks, and is divided into three naves and two side aisles, four spans of different breadth and cross vaults, ending in a single apse. Inside the church we can also find two precious elements: a wooden Crucifix and a “Cappuccina” Tomb.

Stunning old little church.

The parish church of Santa Maria located in Viguzzolo town along the road from Tortona to Salice Terme, just by driving through the town center there is this small Romanesque church, perpetually closed. It is a secular church, better dated at least 1,000 year's back. It is still there, completely surrounded by a thick clear of plants and flowers, the perfect place for photos. The church is lovely, perfectly preserved. To visit it you must to book and be accompanied by a local guide. I think this church it must to be the proud of Viguzzolo town.

Thank you so much for your message....thanks to the group of volounteers of ACV-Associazione Culturale Viguzzolese, it is possible to visit the Church and you can certainly find it open on April, 25th, and on November 4th for the Holy Mass.
