About
The Norton Museum of Art was founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton (1875-1953) and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton (1881-1947). The Museum’s permanent collection now consists of more than 7,600 works in five curatorial departments: European, American, Chinese, Contemporary and Photography. The Museum’s expansion that opened February 9, 2019 was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of the architectural firm Foster + Partners. It is the most comprehensive in the institution’s 78-year history. Dramatic changes include boldly re-orienting the main entrance to South Dixie Highway , which restores the symmetrical east-west campus axis created in 1941 by original architect Marion Sims Wyeth. The building and accompanying lush sculpture garden, enable the Norton to exhibit more art, present more programs, and provide a growing community an up-to-date center for the public to enjoy art and culture.

Nice little museum
May 2021
Modern art, impressionist, some Asian pieces. Had timed entries, limiting visitors allowed in at any specific time, so at times had galleries to ourselves, which was nice.

A wonderful Art "Fix"
May 2021
After a year of avoiding "inside visits" and lamenting Art Museum closings made necessary by Covid 19 We returned to The Norton. It was my B-day weekend and this was the perfect afternoon celebration. Just slowly walking through every gallery from contemporary through impressionism and ending with renaissance masters was a renewing experience. We have seen this collection many times and never tire of it. The Norton is a Florida highlight; it is a gem. i particularly was taken by a large number of pieces. Among my favorites on this visit were the Monet and Pissarro, the Demuth, Braque, Renoir, and portrait of St. Jerome. Prendergast, Chiles, Soutine made my B-day afternoon so special. This is an excellent and widely varied collection. Ended this visit with a walk through the out door sculpture gardens. So refreshing. So glad the Norton has reopened.

Exceeded Our Expectations
Mar 2021
This museum exceeded our expectations. Except for the $5 parking which they should stop charging now!

Many famous pieces and artists. Wonderful Chinese pieces. Lighting and signage excellent. O'Keeffe, Homer, Pollock, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse, and many others.

Need 3+ hours to see their collection. Well worth your time.

I went alone and enjoyed nice sandwich at their cafe on the patio. Wish I had allowed more time in my day. Spent most of my time at the amazing Maria Bellio exhibit which is visiting. Been a long time art has moved me like her large paper mache canvases . Impressive museum.

A WEST PALM BEACH GEM
Jan 2021 • Solo
Reservations necessary. Masks and social distancing enforced. Three floors, with elevators. I particularly liked the Chinese exhibits from bygone eras, although there were paintings and other exhibits I enjoyed and found edifying. This museum is a West Palm Beach gem.

Florida's only world-class museum
Nov 2020
FL has a zillion local museums, and most are worth a visit, but the only one I've found in FL old enough to have the bucks to show important paintings--Impressionists, Medieval things, pictures that are super-expensive now--is the Norton. It's also breath-takingly beautiful outside and has terrific programs and resources inside--even a really good restaurant. It truly is Florida's and maybe the South's best. You will enjoy its architectural beauty, its terrific shop, and its collections maybe more than any other single place in Florida.

West Palm Beach is blessed to have had the Norton's settle here.

This writeup is only about the physical musem and not the extensive garden grounds. The mseum definitely practices mask wearing and social distancing in capital letters. Reservations are mandatory so spcing can be enforced. The museum is on three levels with the ground floor being the largest open to the public. The collection is ecletic featuring ancient Chinese porcelines, 16th to 19th century European painters, modern American art among other items. The rooms are well laid out for specific periods with reasonable descritions of many items. I would allow two hours for an initial visit. We had very littlw interaction with the staff. The museum has an excellent websitee which you need to spend time with before visiting. It is now the largest museum in the State. All ticket prices, depending upon age, are reasonable.

In These Difficult Times,The Norton Art Museum Is Open Again
Dec 2020
The Norton Art Museum has been closed, due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. Now,the Norton Art Museum is open again. The Norton Art Museum is diligently following health protocols in these difficult times(wearing of face masks, social distancing, frequent cleaning of restrooms). The other day,I enjoyed its fine sampling of Old Master European paintings.I saw delightful paintings by Jacopo Da Firenze(Gothic Italian),Goswin Vander Weyden(Netherlandish Renaissance),Lucas Cranach the Elder(German Renaissance,"Betrayal of Christ"),Marcantonio Franchesini,Nicolas Largilliere,Peter Paul Rubens(Flemish Baroque),Jacob Biltius(Dutch Master),Dirk Van Delen(Dutch Master,"Church Interior,Christ and Woman Taken in Adultery"),Jan Thomas Yperan (Flemish Baroque,"Perseus and Andromeda"),Anton Van Dyck(Flemish Baroque),Giovanni Paolo Pannini, and Thomas Gainesborough, among others.
I saw splendid paintings and works of Art by these 19th and 20th Century European Masters;Eugene Fromentin(quality Oriental theme painting),Claude Monet(French Impressionism,"Bordighera"),Camille Pissarro(the paragon of fine Pointillism),Henri Matisse,Pablo Picasso,Jean Metzinger("Landscape with Sailboats"),Raoul Dufy(French Fauve,"Saint Adresse Beach"),Maurice Utrillo(Post Impressionism,"Rue Du Montmartre"),Max Beckmann(German Expressionism),and Constantin Brancusi(fine 20th Century Sculpture),among others.
I relished impressive paintings by these American Painters;Henry Ossawa Tanner,Edmond Tarbell(American Impressionism),C'hilde Hassam(American Impressionism),John Sloan,Robert Henri("Orientale),Marguerite Zorach("Bathers"),Maurice Prendergast("Ramparts,Saint Malo"),John R.Cox(American Regionalism,"Wheatfields"),Rockwell Kent("Holsteinberg,Greenland"),and William Burden("Ridin High"),among others.
I also liked its fine Contemporary Art Works that were on display by George Cohen("Loggia"),Jeff Koons,Mickalene Thomas("Naomi Looking Forward"),Nicholas Cave, and Oliver Herring("Cheryl",a very unique creation),among others.
It was a privilege being back at the Norton Art Museum and hopefully, things will become normal again in West Palm Beach.
