No other barrier island, by design, has 68% of its land area protected from development and is set aside as wilderness area. Sanibel is special because SCCF is such a special organization that seeks to keep Sanibel heavily into conservation. That's why we keep going back to Sanibel. No high rise buildings and great places to ride bikes and enjoy... More

My adopted son asked during this his first visit to Sanibel "what distinguishes Sanibel from the other resort locations in SW Florida"? I said two things come to mind: First, look at the distant shoreline, which is lined with high rise condos. Sanibel doesn't have those high rises. Secondly,Sanibel Island claims to have 68% of its land in protected conservation.... More

We always check the SCCF program when we arrive on the island and try to get to some of the talks and walks. This year we attended the talk on otters and the first Wildflower and Pollinator Walk at the Bailey Homestead Preserve. Both events were led by Dee who is extremely enthusiastic about the island and its conservation, we... More

They have a nice short video and various things to look at about animal rehab. We hoped we could actually see the some of the animals that were in rehab but you can only see the live feeds from the rehab area. That was a little disappointing.

Thoroughly enjoyed the education center and drive through. Next year when we return we are going to explore some of the trails and make a day of it. Very knowledgeable staff and extremely welcoming. Junior Ranger activities for the kids. Great place to visit with or without children. Tons of information.

These folks work daily to preserve the Nature on the Island. As the Loggerhead Turtles lay their eggs, SCCF secures their next, surrounds it with poles and yellow tape, numbers it, and tags it with the yellow SCCF tags. They are checked and watched. You will see this group taking samples, working in all areas of the Island to keep... More

The boat tour is preceded by a visit to the touch area below the gift shop, where our guide Steve shared very interesting information about the sea creatures in the exhibit area and encouraged even the smallest of visitors to touch and hold them. His knowledge of local history, the refuge, and its inhabitants was impressive as we continued the... More

This was not what we expected. The walk through the marshlands is fine except for massive swarms of mosquitoes. We went mid morning and were hoping to see an alligator but did not. The visitor center is informative. the

The trails go through some really interesting terrain. Some of the trails go by the Sanibel River, which is a dark reddish brown with what looks like mold growing on top of it. I saw a giant black snake and the trails were a bit overgrown in some parts. Despite that, there are lots of informative signs on the trails... More
