The grounds are lovely, even better are the people associated with this group. We had one of their volunteers as our guide on a dolphin cruise, older man, dry sense of humor who made what would have otherwise been a very routine experience into a very informative and entertaining one. I was amazed the extent of his dolphin knowledge, he... More

We had never paid much attention to SCCF until this visit to Sanibel, when we visited their Nature Center, walked the Center's trails, stopped at the butterfly house, and realized how much they did to protect the island. The walks were lovely (through marsh, along a slough called the Sanibel River, amid local flora we'd never see elsewhere. We also... More

An interesting site support conservation research in the area. There is a welcome centre and a walking area (suggested donation $5 per person). However, they noted that there were not many animals to be seen and would be more of a view of the local flora.

This trip was our third stay on Sanibel and we decided to join the organization that had played a significant role in creating this paradise. We also had a wonderful tour -- learning about the plants of the island.

Our condo location on the island had us biking by the SCCF Bailey Homestead Preserve (near the corner of Periwinkle and Donax) most everyday. We decided to take crosswalk and explore on our bikes, and we got quite the treat! The Shipley trail takes you alongside a pond with a floating island (gator sighted!), then takes you by the local... The SCCF trails are perfect. While most of Sanibel's trails are crushed shells and noisy these trails are QUIET! The observation tower gives a wonderful overview of the island and the displays are very kid-friendly as well as informative for adults. The staff is well informed, enthusiastic and helpful.

This place has 2 locations. We went to the older one with a cute little butterfly house and then took a walk through the "real" Florida. Saw fish, birds streams, places where fires were used to control invasive species. A relaxed laid back beautiful spot. You could not see the Gulf from the lookout tower but it was a great... More

The visitor's center has nice displays on the wildlife of the area. We walked some of the trails after viewing the displays. Never saw anyone who works there or volunteers there. It would have been nice if someone would have at least come out of an office and said hello. But this is worth a stop if you want to... More

We visited a couple of SCCF sites but the most amazing was the nursery at Baileys Preserve. There is parking here and a walk that takes you behind the windmill and along to Pond Apple Trail. Best place to see Woodstock, heron, gators, Anhinga etc. We went several times...located behind Montana restaurant

SCCF is a different aspectof Sanibel. Everyone knows the Gulf beaches, and most people know the mangroves at Ding Darling. SCCF is in the interior of the island and offers docent tours of the wetlands ecosystem. SCCF has been acquiring wetlands properties in the island interior - you'll see SCCF signs along many roads marking the wetlands properties they're protecting... More
