Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

Delightful inside and outside. Enjoyed a stroll around campus and a trip to the friendly folks in the bookstore following a most engaging security guard's recommendation.

No matter where you look - Mr Flagler's legacy is alive and well in St Augustine. This campus is beautiful. We did not take an "official" tour with a student, however; they are given hourly. The main building was the Ponce De Leon hotel and its architecture is a delight to behold.

this is a great student led tour of what was a grand hotel turned college. Learn a little more about Flagler the man, and explore yet another of his great achievements.

We just had a chance to walk around the college. The main building used to be the main hotel of St. Augustine built by the man who developed railroads in Florida. The buildings were works of art as were the grounds. I would suggest you get there early and arrange for a tour. We missed so much by just walking... More

My wife and I went to Flagler College, and it is always a great pleasure to visit every time we can to St.Augustine. The historical value of this place is amazing, when you get in the main lobby you can experience life in the 1800 and early 1900s. The tours are also great. We highly recommend it.

Tours provided by students who can inform about student life as well as the history and architecture. Impressive building with lots of Tiffany glass, but in subdued colours, wood and tiles. Tour lasts about one hour. You need to stay close to the guide to hear her, there is no speaker system, especially in the dining room where the acoustics... More

Truly a gem that we as Americans can truly appreciate as part of our heritage. A wonderful glimpse into the lifestyle of the rich and famous during the Gilded Age

My husband and I visited the former Ponce de Leon, now Flagler College. We enjoyed the tour given by Blake Stafford, a student at the school.
