The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail officially opened in July 2011. The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail offer 12 miles of hiking and biking trails, including an 1800-ft. boardwalk with wheelchair accessibility. A 1/4-mile crushed shell path leads to an 1800-foot boardwalk, then the trails become ground level, sandy/grassy relatively flat berms with swamp on both sides. The trails are actually old tram roads used when the area was logged many years ago. Biking can be a challenge on the grassy/sandy trails, but quite rewarding. The maple-cypress swamp is home to alligators, otters, Florida panthers, bobcats, white-tailed deer and more. There is one port-o-potty at the beginning of the boardwalk and several benches along the trail within the first 1.5 miles. Beyond that there are no structures. Birders will delight in the abundance of songbirds that frequent the cypress trees along the boardwalk, as well as the many raptors and wading birds found along the trails. Barred owls are common and swallow-tailed kites frequent the area in summer.

This place is amazing! We walked the whole 12 miles and it took us about 5 hours as there was so much to see and so many photo opportunities. Alligators were everywhere, often lying right over the trails but we soon got the hang of walking around them. They were not at all interested in us but happy to lie... More

We had the best time here. We saw all kinds of birds. We saw several alligators. Our favorite was seeing the otters hunt and eat fish. They're so cute. The birds let us sit and watch them like we weren't even there. The spoonbill, ibis, and egret trio were so funny. Saw a beautiful hawk. Lots of vultures. There's no... More

I come here often and the wildlife is everywhere if your patient, quiet and observe your surroundings. Lots of birds and gators and I've seen water moccasons on many occasions so watch where you step. I've seen a panther, few bears, otters, and many birds

My husband and I were looking for a good hike while visiting Naples. This was that and more. We hiked the full 12 miles. The beginning of the trail includes a boardwalk opening up to a fairly wide path that seemed recently mowed, but when you reach about mile 5 the path narrows and is more overgrown. We saw birds,... I just discovered this place and hope to visit it for a longer exploration. I enjoyed a quiet walk in nature with many birds and saw an adult and baby gators. I only had time to go about a mile. I understand you can see much more wildlife, including otters if you go further. Next time I will pack a... More

We brought bikes, and the path was wide enough for two. We saw a lot of groups, pairs, and singles, very safely traversing the rugged path. Birding and nature..and perfectly set up for pictures, walking, biking and getting close to nature. Gators!! Gotta be careful, but plenty of regulars who have advice, and great suggestions.

I took this walk with friends as a "Busman's holiday". I give guided walks at the Six Mile Cypress Slough preserve. During this walk we were accompanied by one of the volunteer guides who did a fine job. The trails are at ground level, not like the boardwalk at the Slough. This may be more important to note during the... More

We are lucky to live here year round and frequently visit the CREW Bird Rookery for delightful walks in nature. Amazing variety of birds and even alligators up close. Plan at least an hour on the walk but you can walk 1 to 7 miles easily.
