The Bass...

Currently closed for major renovations and re-opens October 2017.

The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. Recognized for organizing the first solo museum exhibitions in the United States of international artists such as Erwin Wurm, The Bass also presents major exhibitions by influential artists, such as El Anatsui, Isaac Julien, Eve Sussman and Piotr Uklański. The exhibition program encompasses a wide range of media and artistic points of view that bring new thought to the diverse cultural context of Miami Beach.

The Bass Museum of Art was founded in 1964 by the City of Miami Beach after the donation of the private collection by John and Johanna Bass. The museum opened in what was formerly the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, a 1930s Art Deco building designed by Russell Pancoast, which already had a rich history on Miami Beach as the first public exhibition space for art in South Florida. In 2001, the museum conducted its first major renovation designed by Tokyo-based architect Arata Isozaki, adding a new wing and second level to house a total of 16,000 square feet of exhibition space. It is a small museum in a wonderful setting. It is rather poorly advertized, but worth a visit. We always enjoy touring this museum.

Dear Jean, Thank you very much for your kind words about the museum. I sincerely apologize for giving you a bad impression of our advertising. As you are aware, our current renovation has spanned the past 18 months and is truly an institutional transformation. When we re-open this fall, I can assure you that our visibility will be greatly enhanced.... More

I have seen some top notch exhibitions of important Art over the years. The last I remember was Picasso's sketches. Long before wonderful Art Basel Miami Beach was lucky to have this gem of a museum.

Bass Museum of Art is located on Collins Park, an area donated to the city by John Collins the first developer of Miami Beach. The stone building in the park was originally the John Collins Memorial Library when it was dedicated in 1930 but is now part of the Bass Museum. If you enjoy Art, this is then a must-see... More

The museum is really a must if you travel to Miami Beach, they used to host an event "Bass under the sunset" or something like this, I've been there couple times and it has been amazing, nice and smart people, good music and good drinks.

We've been here twice in 3 years but never find this museum open. Was told they had an exhibit in the library, so we went there. Very, very few paintings on exhibit. Very disappointed.
