- pawel_hbgSopot, Poland9,999 contributionsBeautiful viewsWe have made one of or maybe even the most popular hiking trail in Oman- W6 Balcony Trail (Jabal Shams). Just put this in Google and you will be navigated to parking which is beginning of hike. I reccommend 4×4 SUV car but we have seen also normal sedan cars. Then you just need to drive much slower to get there and more watch out. Hike takes about 3/4 hours both ways. Views are amazing, wild goats on the way so cute. Just take 1/1 .5 l water with you. Hike is quite easy. Go to same end. If you see first buildings of abandoned village, then go extra 15 minutes to same end to see great view on canyon. Definetely I can warmly reccommend going there.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada2,050 contributionsVery ScenicThe Jebel Shams are unlike anything we've seen before and were a short trip from Muscat. To access the area you should use a 4x4 vehicle but it may be worthwhile to get an expert guide so you can truly enjoy the scenery. Bring good food, snacks and water if you plan to visit here and don't go after the rains or if there is rain in the forecast because the conditions could change quickly and the roads are not that great.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- StringyLeatherhead, United Kingdom7 contributionsBalcony WalkAn excellent walk which really isn’t dangerous in any way. Good views of the canyon and seeing the abandoned homes at the end was fascinating. How did they manage to live there? 4km each way. Took us 2 hours in total but we were rushing a bit due to setting off later in the afternoon and wanted to get back before the sun set. The afternoon is a good time to go as you are then walking in the shade.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 November 2023

Far cooler than Muscat, the intimidating sounding Balcony walk is relatively easy and very enjoyable.

It’s absolutely worth the visit and the view is amazing. The highest point in Oman, you can drive up to the view point where you will be greeted by a few friendly goat and then you’re free to explore, walk and take in the gorgeous surroundings and views

This area would be dwarfed by it’s American counterpart but what it lacks in scale it more than makes up for in experience. America is commercial, America is populated, America is loud. Not here ! Nothing exploitative, nothing touristy. Just you, a few goats, the odd fellow traveller, some locals and THE most magnificent ‘Balcony’ trekking trail. Be challenged. Be inspired. Be ‘at one’…

Yesterday, November 30, 2022, me and my friends came to Jebel Shams after Mishfa Old House Al Abryeen and Al Hamra Old Village.
It was my first time experience to come and visit the three tourist destinations. Glad to know that Mishfa Old House, one of the places i visited was also the place where His Highness Prince Charles visited last 5th Nov. 2016. It’s amazing to see the Mishfa Old House strong foundation that stands still for a thousand years and more.
Al Hamra Old Village was an attraction that is unique and antique. Traces of physical forces of nature paved the way naturally to keep the atmosphere of the old village place ruined.
Lastly, we went to Jebel Shams. The peak of the mountain is so beautiful. Timely, the weather or season is getting cold.
Thank you, Sunshine Tours and Mr. Said, for delivering us all safe either to our tourist spot destination or to our place. ❤️🇴🇲

We visited jebel shams on a day trip. we were happy to have hired a guide with a 4 wheel car. it is not recommended to do the trip with a normal car. he showed us around the mountain and drove very safely. jebel shams is really impressive and it is alos possible to hike for people without fear of heights

Drove to Jebel shams and did the balcony walk, an easy hike that takes 2-3 hours. Suitable for most ages as there are only a few slight tricky spots mainly due to being slippery. Needless to say there are some great views

Did the balcony walk, amazing hike. Like a lot of People we read different reviews on how to reach the site/hotels (dangerous road, do you need a driver and/or 4WD ect). We just (March 2020, dry weather) got back driving ourselves and YES you can reach the resorts (eg sama heights) by 2WD and YES you can also reach the balcony walk start point by 2WD. Just use your common sense and use low gears to slow down going downhill.

If you have a proper car and put your light on it shouldn’t be a problem if you drive careful until you’re on normal road again. Enjoy!!
Ciao, sapreste indicarmi dov'è il luogo panoramico del Wadi ghul? Nel tour che sto organizzando devo prenotare l'alloggio per le notti in montagna e vorrei capire quanto distante si trova, grazie! Cristina

Hi there I am interested in your itinerary whereby you stayed at Misfat and then did the Jebel Shams walk. Was the walk the Balcony walk. We are planning on hiring a 2wheel drive car but have experience on gravel roads. Is it possible to go both Jebe Sham and Misfat by two wheel drive car?Is the road to Msfat paved or gravel?
Thanks we are looking forward to our holiday in the area

Hi there,
Would you recommend a guide for the W4 trek or is the route clear enough without one? Struggling to find any decent maps for the area also so if anyone has a recommendation that would be great.
Kind regards,
David

More or less straight route. Ask locals. There’s a village at he top from where the trek starts. Once you get up there, rest is easy to find. Take water and head cover. A hydration pack is ideal. No food water or restrooms. Pure nature. Give yourself at least 6 hours.
The trek itself, once you start, is marked with a tricolor striped monogram (like a European flag) on rocks in clearly visible spots along the way. These markers keep you on the straight path. Just follow those and you’ll be fine.

Buongiorno a tutti voi visitatori dell' Oman!
Grazie a tutti, Nabila
P.S: il viaggio è prossimo!! Devo mettere a punto una pianificazione!!

Ho visto anche autovetture, ma l'ultimo tratto è abbastanza dissestato. il fuoristrada è più indicato.

Can you hire a driver with a 4x4 from a parking lot / gas station that can be reached with a saloon car? How much would that cost approx.?
Do you need a 4x4 to go to Misfat al Abriyeen?
Thanks!
