What a fantastic experience! Phillips tour of his beloved home was refreshing, knowledgable and jam packed with lots of surprises. We originally went for the glow worms, but our time at Nikau Cave gave us so much more than that. Be ready to crawl through caves and to get a little muddy, all under the protective wing of your host.... More

We stayed with friends who live about an hour away. They hadn't been here so we agreed to give it a go. One of our group is not keen on enclosed spaces but nevertheless we booked it. They took us on the route that goes across unsealed roads with beautiful scenery along the way. We knew there was a cafe... More

From the moment we arrived at nikau caves this morning the staff treated us like family in their relaxed manor. The food was home grown and delicious and the scenery was breathtaking. Charlotte was a wonderful guide and made sure we were all comfortable and enjoying the caving experience. We will be back again for another visit soon!

Even though we were a bit late we were waited for and nothing was being rushed. Our guide was extremely friendly and took good care of us. After entering the cave we at first tried not to get wet, but soon lost our fear and walked through knee deep water. After a little crawling the cave opened up and we... More

As I have visited this beautiful area many times I have to write that the consistency in service from local big country farming family that is always good as with an environment that is unique, tranquil and rejuvenating. A must visit. The drive can be a breath of fresh air if you turn off at Pokeno (those coming from north)... More

Quite different from the normal touristic cave experience: a bit of a challenge but well worth the effort. Age shouldn't be a barrier (we are in our 60s and thoroughly enjoyed the experience). The glow-worms shone bright and we could see some up close. It was interesting to learn that Phillip's daughter is the current female world champion sheep-shearer (and... More

Didn't know what to expect and thankfully it was not the normal touristy thing. It's not a wander along pre - made stages, you actually feel like you putting effort in. Along with a great guide, beautiful lunch, and stunning surroundings. Even if you can't manage the caves it's well worth a trip just for the location.

This is caving in the rough. You will get wet, muddy, crawl, and be rewarded in the end. Small groups keep this non-commercial and it is inexpensive. The cafe serves excellent food. Service is friendly. This must be s family run business and you will be treated as a friend. In fact we were served by the owner's friend who... More

My family loved Phillip and his messy, fun, authentic cave tour. Our nine year old loved it. Be warned that the crawl is about 15 meters long and you don't get much of a warning. Great!

I have lived in NZ all my life, and have only recently heard about this. What a place. Nikau Caves differs from others like Waitomo in that it is far less commercial/touristy. It is less quiet, and the tours only consist of 10 people, so the experience is far better. It can get slightly claustrophobic, so it isn't for everyone,... More
