Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powdered by the natural resources that surrounded it. Today it is 235 acres of wooded rolling hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with hundreds of stone ruins of the black powder industry, dozens of restored buildings associated with the business, and the first du Pont family home built in America. Here, for more than 200 years, the DuPont Company and family experimented, innovated, and pursued the American Dream.

Hagley has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1972. The site is a National Historic Landmark, National Recreation Trail, and a Historic Engineering Landmark.

Our tour today was extremely interesting. The self guided museum exhibits were not just pictures with short text. There were dioramas, interactive and well constructed displays. We took the shuttle tour of the grounds which are immense. Our guide was amazing. She has been with Hagley for 25 years and it shows. Her wealth of information and ability to answer... More

The museum is situated in a big spacious land. Visitors can have a nice walk around the vicinity which still have the old houses and a church. This museum is rich in history of the E.I. duPont family and how the family business started in 1800s with making gunpowder and grew into a big 500 Fortune company. Really worth a... More

A beautiful property of gardens and historic buildings - great for history lovers and kids. It also is the depository of the history of the DuPont's. Nice exhibits and buildings/rooms for rent for special events. Worth a visit.

This is right down the street from the house and we make it our destination on our daily walks. We only wish they would let us run or even better walk up to the main house.

Thank you so much for writing a review of Hagley! We think this is a beautiful place to walk, too! Unfortunately, we cannot allow the upper property area to be accessible to pedestrians year-round for safety reasons, but we do allow guests to walk, run, or bike the upper property during our summertime Bike and Hike series. That series runs... More

I have been to Hagley so many times I cannot give an estimate. It is the foremost research center in the country, perhaps in the world, for American business history. In the collections are sizeable archives for many of the great American businesses. This sort of thing is for the specialist. For the general public, there are exhibits inside the... More

This is the original site of the DuPont Company, where gunpowder was made. It is located along the Brandywine River, which provided the power for the mills. There is something for everyone at this museum: a beautiful natural setting along the Brandywine, American history, manufacturing history, engineering of the mills, the original DuPont family home, gardens and more. For scholars... More

The display of patent models from the 1800's is unique and first-rate. You'll find everything from improved mouse traps, to washing machines, to swinging porch swings. This is a terrific testament to American inventiveness. Superbly displayed. Staff very helpful. Well worth your time.

A wonderful Christmas visit to Hagley! The house was beautifully decorated - as it would have been through the years. Our guide was very knowledgable and it was an easy bus ride from the visitor center to the house.
