We had a terrific day climbing Carrauntoohil via the Devil's Ladder and down the Zig Zags. We were very nervous as it was our first time at the Reeks and we were absolutely delighted with our guide Donie who just made the day, we felt very at ease and were guided ever step of the way at a manageable pace and he was great fun too and we had many laughs along the way. Donie had great knowledge of the area and gave fantastic safety tips and practical hiking tips and he safely showed us all the best spots for views and kindly took many photos for us which are amazing memories to have. It is a challenging but highly rewarding climb and we were so glad to have an experienced guide with us as we wouldn't go without one. We will be definitely back to try other routes and will be booking in with Reeks Company again. Thank you Reeks Guiding company for such an amazing experience, I would 100% recommend booking them for a safe hike and incredible experience on Ireland's highest mountain.

We climbed Carrauntoohil on 17/7/21 and debated whether or not we needed a guide but as we were all inexperienced we decided to go with a guide.
John was responsive by email and the booking process was straight forward and uncomplicated and walking groups were small.
Donie was our guide for the day and he added so much to the experience. He took us up O Sheas Gully and down the Zig Zags. The longest routes he said but quieter and that we would get much better views and sense of the mountains and we sure did.
Donie paced us and kept us together and we could just relax and enjoy. He made a big effort to get to know our names and very quickly the banter and craic was flying.
Carrauntoohil is definitely more of a climb than a hike.Having a guide will add so much to your day and you won't find better than the team at The Lodge and Reeks Guiding Company.

Called John the week I was going to climb and he fitted me in no problem.
I was apprehensive that morning especially when I seen the mountain up close.
We had Eamon bringing us up and he made me feel very comfortable and was full of encouragement all the way. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the vista's were amazing, could see for miles. I was a 1st time climber in Kerry and a newbie to hill walking. Eamon was very patient with my pace as I would'nt be the fastest in the world Had an unforgettable experience and will definitely be using John and Eamon again and would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks a mil Eamon and John.

We had a great day climbing Carrantouhill with Donie. He was such a good guide- very experienced and full of local knowledge. He made us feel totally comfortable at all times and was full of encouragement. He made the climb seem relaxed and fun. I would highly recommend him for anyone taking on Carrantouhill.

John must have ordered in the weather because it was a glorious summer day for our climb up Carrauntoohil. John chose the slightly longer route up O'Shea's Gully and we were so glad he did as we bypassed the normal busy 'tourist route' up Devil's Ladder.
We would have gotten lost or stuck without an experienced guide and John knew every foothold and handhold on the mountain providing us with an amazing accent of Ireland's highest peak. John was a wealth of information and a safe pair of hands especially near ledges and the steeper sections. Having a guide allowed us to bypass the crowds and really experience the best views of the Kilnaskuddy reeks, without the crowds. Highly recommended! Thanks John, we'll be back for the three peaks soon.

We hiked Carrauntoohill on Tuesday 13th July with John O'Sullivan. I would highly recommend John as a guide. The group was very reassured with John's advice on climbing Carrauntoohill. He was able to quickly establish the pace of the group and most suitable route and we climbed the devil's ladder and made our way down via the zig zag via Cnoc na Toome. Great experience, Thanks John. Stephen Co-Derry.

As a couple of well-experienced mountain hikers from the NE USA, Carrauntoohill and the Coomloughra Loop were very difficult. Without rocky, exposed ridge experience, they were very scary for us, and we easily could have been in danger. John was amazing and helped guide us safely through. Cannot recommend him enough. Definitely use Reeks Guiding if you are not from the area/are used to exposed ridge hiking. On a very dangerous hike, a local guide is a definite must and John did an outstanding job of keeping us safe and leading us through.

This was our first time climbing Carrauntoohil. John was an excellent guide. I'd say that he knows every inch of the Hag's Glen. We were a bit apprehensive before climbing: we had no idea of the difficulty or danger. John put us at ease and a full loop of the Glen made for a very enjoyable and easy day's climb. There is no doubt is it a dangeous mountain if you don't know what you are doing and we were vey happy that John was there. I wouldn't have fancied climbing it without his experitise. His being a member of Kerry Mountain Rescue also helps with any doubts. He figured out a nice pace for us without us even realising it. He has a lovely relaxed manner but he is well able to move the pace up as well if that's what you want. He always injected good humour into the conversations and was very knowledgable on every aspect of the mountain, of climbing, on activities, geography, history, local stories. I'd love to do the climb again and John will be the guide the next time around as well. :-)

John was a fantastic guide and I don’t know if I would’ve been able to complete the climb without his expertise and guidance. It was pretty difficult conditions with poor visibility but having John lead us meant not only that we completed the summit but were able to enjoy it too. It was great to head back down a different route to explore some more of Carrauntoohil and felt safe knowing John was guiding. I’d highly recommend getting a guide if it’s your first time as the conditions can change so quickly and no better Kerry man for the job than John! 10/10 John 👍 thanks a bunch!

Amazing hike! I could not recommend the Lodge&Reeks Guiding service enough. John's friendly and prompt correspondence made booking a date quick and easy. He also provided us with detailed information on exactly what you need for the day.
Eamonn was an exceptional guide. He set a manageable pace for our group of 7 and gave us plenty of breaks! He gave us a history of the area and brought us up the most scenic route. He was more than obliging when we asked him to take photographs of our group and did a great job! (See below)
Toilet facilities cafe at the base were excellent.
