About Cronin's Yard - Day Walks
For over 200 years Cronin’s Yard has been used as the traditional starting point for ascents of Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil. Situated at the entrance to the Hag’s Glen at Mealis, Beaufort, this is the gateway to the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. With ample car parking facilities in place Cronin’s Yard offers the walker/climber a selection of services from packed lunches to a well deserved hot shower after a long day on Ireland’s premier mountain range. Cronin’s Yard is also home to the memorials of the 1943 US Skytrain disaster (the crash site being just above Cronin’s at Cummeenapeasta Lake). We provide facilities including a campsite, camping pods, tea rooms with home baked goods, shower rooms and have a beautifully restored cottage on the grounds available to rent.

Cronin's Yard is a facility for those that wish to walk in the Reeks and parking the car there requires a €2 coin to be inserted at the barrier when exiting. In return, the Yard has clean toilets, a meeting area, a cafe, benches etc. This is a fantastic facility worth every bit of the €2, just remember to take a €2 coin with you.

If you are wondering where to start your climb on Carrantoohil, this is the place you are looking for! They have a big car park (prepare 2 EUR in cash), toilets, hot showers and a small tea room where you can get tea, coffee, warm soup and delicious scones. As well as souvenirs like magnets. We parked our car there to climb Carrantoohil, but you can also camp over there. Either with your camper van or with just a tent. The place is secured, well looked after and very safe. The trail to the summit it's very easy to find, so don't worry about getting a map. You can easily see the path or simply follow the people. During our visit there was quite a lot of people, but it wasn't overcrowded. Well recommended!!!

This is a brilliant place to come to after a great days climb. Excellent staff and the food was great, specially Esthers home-made apple tarts. Although we didn't didn't stay overnight the facilities were first class for anybody engaged in outdoor pursuits.

This is a really nice day hike that takes about 2 hrs including stopping for photos and to pet sheep along the way. You get some nice views of the city from up here and it takes you to a nice little pond at the end. It costs 2 euro to park. I recommend taking the loop clockwise. It takes you over some bridges, through fields, up hills, over streams. We had a fun time hiking this. Fair warning, look for the posts so you know which direction to walk or you will end up lost or wandering into the sheep territory. Recommend!

The parking for Carrantuohill is appreciated. So, too, are the toilets and the chance of a bite after a climb. The service is helpful and pleasant. Just one thing, though. Why in the name of God would someone assume that Bloomberg should be the choice of TV station to air in the restaurant? People go to places like Carrantuohill to forget about the world, not to pick up on stock prices as they are nursing aches and pains...
