The Yale Center for British Art is a public art museum and world-renowned research institute. Presented to Yale University by Paul Mellon (Yale College Class of 1929), the Center houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, rare books, and manuscripts reflects the development of British art and life from the Elizabethan period to the present day. Works on view include masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner, and John Constable, as well as artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain. Perhaps its greatest treasure is the building itself, a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by architect Louis I. Kahn. Located in downtown New Haven, the Center is near many of the city's best restaurants, theaters, and shops.

I was surprise by the collections of this museum. You can easily spend a few hours in the museum. Those Yale students are lucky!

Even if you are not into art/painting with the temperature at freezing point warm yourself up for a couple of hours with a visit, and it's free. Saw paintings I had seen pictures of or thought were in the National Gallery in London.

This museum has the largest collection of British art outside the UK, and like in all the museums of Yale University - there's no entrance fee. I enjoyed the vast collection and couldn't help admiring the beautiful building of the museum as well: it was designed by American architect Louis Khan, and it's very impressive. When in New Haven -... More

So classic works, a great facility in the middle of downtown New haven. It is not the Met or Lourve. A Half day trip takes you for the full tour. Yale art museum is across the street so a short walk gets you two for one.

This is definitely the best British art collection outside of England. Each floor is crammed with some of the finest works of British art by all the big name painters and artisans from every period. Rooms are big, spacious and airy. There are several spots to sit to ponder and admire the displays and exhibits. Right across the street from... More
