Such great service!
Apr 2021 • Family
Hi just to say, we had a few traumas on our trip round Cumbrae, our kids hired a tandem, which went great, good bike great service, but then our son on his own bike went over the handlebars and was badly shook up (all ok now!) but his wheel was buckled badly. Then my wife’s bike chain snapped. So we cycled/walked back to Millport, returned the tandem, but wondered if the chaps at Mapes could fix the wheel and chain, which they did brilliantly, so quickly and with no fuss as the boy went to the hospital. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone at Mapes and I would highly recommend them as the place to go for excellent bikes, repairs and service in Millport!

Hi, Thanks so much for the positive feedback. Can I take it that the wee man is OK, no broken bones? We were worried. Hope he got back to school and to his friends the next day. It definitely wasn't the best of days for you guys and we are glad that we could make it all a bit easier. Hope to see you again soon on better circumstances. The Mapes of Millport Team

Not great!
Nov 2020 • Solo
I bought a bike from Mapes of Millport, a very expensive one. It turned up damaged. The box was falling apart. There were chips and scratches on the frame of the bike and the mud guards. Both wheels were buckled. There were pieces missing. The company made it excruciatingly difficult to resolve this. They kept blaming the courier instead of sorting it out and talking about how small a company they are. To the customer, it doesn’t matter if the shop or the courier is to blame, it’s more important to get the matter resolved.

I suspect the bike was not brand new as advertised and was actually second hand and “refurbished” as the box had a label on referring to a different bike and the instruction booklet that came with it referred to yet another different bike.

To all that read this please understand: we never missed a reply, ususall repying instantly to an email from Melissa even late in the evenings and on weekends, we provided evidence where required to, we were open and upfront with a full refund as per our returns section on the shopping site from the start, we offered solutions to problems, we have met with the requirements of Melissa’s expectations. If you want to know the whole story, please read our reply below. Hi Melissa, Sorry for the delay in getting back to this review our alerts are not coming through. Just to confirm what has happened, over the course of this complaint totalling over 70 emails to and fro, with at least 10 arriving before the bike was even dispatched, most of the emails being handled when arrived which was late in the evening as late asl 11pm and over the weekends. When you ordered the £250 bike, a Viking Belgravia pink step through which is an entry-level bicycle, nice but still an entry-level bike, we assured you that we had built and inspected and repackaged because of issues with the supplier previously. The bike was in perfect condition with all parts when it left our shop. We provided you with an invoice to prove the bike was only purchased from the manufacturer 2 weeks prior to being sold to you so could not be refurbished or second hand, also we had security footage of the bike being unpackaged inspected and repackaged and the care and time that was taken to do this. Once you sent us the images of the state of the box we were, as you were, disgusted with how this had been handled by the courier and with the level of dissatisfaction and damage, we instantly offered you a full refund upon the return of the bike, but you advised that nothing less than full refund of postage and 25% refund on the bike would be acceptable as you wanted to keep the bike. Which we thought strange being that it was in such a bad condition. Images sent, showed a couple of small marks on the frame, rubber black scuffsband tiny chips, for this we offered a solution of compensation, which again was unacceptable, we requested that the bike was returned for a full refund, this again was unacceptable. We advised that we would be pursuing the delivery company for compensation and as this was the first time ever, we have had this issue and that we would keep you up to date and give further compensation should we receive it, we had offered you the opportunity to do this yourself, but you did not want to fill out any additional paperwork. At this stage, we did refund the postage (£45.00) as you had advised that it was only fair to do so and we agreed, and we thought this was the matter closed, however, email after email you kept adding issues week after week more and more to the point the damage to the bike would have cost more than the bike itself was worth, this was when we had to involve our legal team as every request to return was refused. (we have kept all emails in an archive folder for future training) Please do not take this the wrong way but there is a point where we need to stop and assess things. The claim from you was now standing all in at approximately £150 for “busted wheels”, marked/damaged paint and missing parts, damaged gears, paint damaged mudguards and your time to attempt to repair, all this makes us wonder why you wanted to keep the bike so much considering the state it was in. When it was taken to Halfords for all this work to be carried out a receipt for £20 was provided and a standard service evaluation form showing nothing worked on other than the saddle, handlebars and gears, please also bear in mind the handlebars and saddles both were removed for delivery so are fully expected to have to be put back in. All that said we always aim to offer the best service and ensure we maintain our 100% customer satisfaction; we are not naive and understand we cannot please everyone. We are confident that you will have received our email advising that the insurance for the damages has come through and we have reimbursed you more than the amount of the work, more than your initial request totalling to almost 50% of the value of the bike. Which we hope will go some way to restoring faith in small local businesses. As a small business we do follow up on our promises and as we have never had this happen it was a new area to work with and we are delighted that you have received more than what you initially wanted and that your additional cash will be in the bank in time for Christmas. Kind Regards, Scott

Absolutely brilliant fun these electric bikes are. Highly recommend a spin.
Would love some of our own!
Friendly, very safe experience.
Toy shop next door is one of the best we’ve seen.
Two big kids that we are couldn’t leave empty handed so we bought a kite.

Bike hire." On Yer Bike " Mapes of Milton!
Sep 2020
Very poor customer service yesterday.29th of September 2020.We decided since it was a lovely day after dropping in a Birthday cake to an 88 year old friend we would hire a bike for an hour or two on Millport.
We got to Largs at 2.20pm and had lovely Customer Service in Nardinis at the Port end. My favourite Bovril and Cream Crackers as the ferry wasn't going till 3.15pm .WE got the bus in and unfortunately chose Mapes of Milton as it was first bike hire shop( red one) instead of our usual " On your bike " ( The blue one).It was 3.45pm.The young boy asked us if we would be back by 5pm and we said definitely. No helmets no measuring of bikes for us no number to contact if any problems. My friend hadn't been on a bike in 20 years. We came back in plenty of time and the young boy said £16! I said we only had the bike for an hour each and he said they only do half days!I said they should have explained that when we got them and we would have walked 100yards to On your bike. On your bike is £6 for a day !! and Mapes of Milton are £8 and hour if you go in the last hour!!.I simply said I wasn't paying it and would pay £4 each for the hour. The boss didn't come out shouted from the back that was fine to get rid of us I think. What a way to treat visitors to a Scottish Island trying to boost the economy and get it going again!Mapes of Milton not to be recommended for bike hire until they learn a bit of customer service and possibly change front of staff! It is " On Yer Bike" to Mapes of Milton as far as we are concerned. The rest of our day Bus driver on Millport and girl in Nardinis couldn't have been more pleasant.

Hi Emma, Many thanks for taking the time to write this review and I am delighted that you had a great time at the other locations listed. Sorry, you felt the need to leave a one-star review for Mapes of Millport. (not Milton as mentioned altogether too many times, people of Milton please font get offended) As I had it from what I could hear all was fine and you were quite, well, happy, everything went well with the ride etc until you were asked to pay for the rental, at which point you got quite angry, more demanding, some would go as far as to say nippy, verging on threatening ... and TOLD the staff you were not paying that for an hour even though the prices were listed and advised and you knew we were shutting at 5 pm As mentioned all the charges are listed in the window and our set prices will not be forever, however, Mapes of Millport is the only shop listed on Cumbrae as taking part in Visit Scotland's "we're good to go" scheme which proves that we have run through a very rigorous COVID 19 risk assessment. From this we have decided for your safety, that of our staff and local residents that when our bikes return from hire we use a product called Viro-Kill (£50 per bottle and we go through lots) and then quarantine the bike until safe to use again (usually the next day) Further to this we use a Fogging Machine (£800) on both the Toy Shop and the Bike Shop to add an extra layer of safety to ensure peace of mind and security. In respect to helmets, I am delighted to advise that we have over 300 available, FREE of charge so as to encourage safety again listed in the window, I am sure you never asked for them, otherwise you would have got one. Sadly as per our COVID-19 risk assessment, we are minimising footfall into the shop to ensure the safety of you (the customer), our staff and our vulnerable island community. All our helmets are situated by the till which was handy when everyone came into the shop however from this review I will take on board that some may need to be helped and we ask if helmets are needed as often as possible or where people don't ask. All our staff know how to size up bikes and you were given 288 and 28 both were the correct size for use and were not adjusted as I could see when brought back so I am not sure what was wrong with the bikes but all seemed to be good upon return and no comment made again until the charge was advised. Just to advise that ALL of our bikes carry our telephone number on big white stickers placed very obviously on the frame, I can only apologise that you didn't see the sticker but I can guarantee they are there present and correct on all 440 of our bikes. I personally don't feel that this is a fair review of service provided, this is more on the fact that you are unhappy at our charges which we believe to be fair based on the extra levels of protection. We do advertise a full day but have not charged it as we are still running on reduced hours so are only using a half-day (£8 for 10 am until 5 pm) and so far everyone has been happy with this and more than understanding. As mentioned we hope to get back to normality as soon as possible and will continue to deliver the best customer services, providing the best bikes at excellent prices. I do also think you have some strong negativity placed on Milton, is there may be something you want to get off your chest about that? Best Day Out
Aug 2020 • Couples
We hired a tandem for a cycle around the island to much amusement and warnings about making or breaking a marriage!!! It was just so much fun and the staff at Mapes couldn't have been more helpful, giving us tips on how to get going, adjusting the bike and advising us on which way round the island we should go.
I highly recommend this for a fun day out, nearly all flat around the island so easy cycling for everyone and a great selection of bikes to choose from for all ages and abilities.

Extremely happy with service

Visited toy shop for sensory gadgets yesterday which are not available everywhere. Great selection and staff extremely helpful. Gave a rough description of what I was looking for and found for us. As regular visitors to Millport and Mapes would recommend both for a great day out or holiday

Magic Mapes

It's no wonder Mapes are 5 star rated. More often than not when the sun is shining you'll know where they are straight away with the queue of people eagerly awaiting their bike ride round the island. You never have to wait long and know the friendly efficient staff will provide you with the right bike for you. The barracuda e-bikes are our favourites. Millport is such a beautiful island to cycle round.

Kids love the toy shop and insist on going every time we visit. Staff always friendly and pleasant. A piece was missing from one of the kites we bought and as soon as we realised it was immediately replaced with no issue. Great service.

Cycle round Millport
Mar 2020 • Couples
Visited Millport & hired bikes from Mapes of Millport. Would highly recommend them. Fantastic service from beginning to end and a great price. Owner was very friendly & took the time to ensure the bikes were appropriate for us. After a little mishap caused by ourselves we phoned & the owner came straight to us and got us back on the road within minutes. It was a lovely cycle around the island. We are definitely coming back and will use Mapes again!
