The American West once had hundreds of precious metal mills. Now, most are in various stages of ruin. One important exception is the Mayflower Mill, (or the Shenandoah-Dives Mill) located two miles northeast of Silverton. A National Historic Landmark, this wonderful piece of mining history is open to the public. Witness first hand how the miners were able to extract gold, silver and base metals from the hard rock ores in this complete processing mill. The San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado were one of the last ranges to be prospected. Although some prospectors were still looking for placer gold, it was becoming quite evident that if any wealth was to be made in the San Juans, it was going to be in underground lode mining.

I love self-guided tours, because you can linger at certain spots longer than others. This mill was a great experience. I especially loved seeing how everything was just left as it was the day it closed. It's great to see all the inner workings of...More

We did the self-guided tour as part of the Silverton Heritage Pass, after we finished the Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour, and we were really glad we planned enough time to visit all three attractions. The Mill was about a 5-10 minute drive from the...More

We visited here with our two kids who are 7 and 10. It was very cool especially the multiple buttons that you could push to make some of the equipment work. The gentleman working at the mill was very friendly and helpful. We were glad...More

kind of a long walk from downtown Silverton, believe that shuttles may be available...we did it as part of a 4WD tour...very interesting and informative and gives good insight into the area mining industry.

Self-guided tour is comprehensive and very well thought out. They processed ore to get gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc You can follow the entire process.

It's one thing to visit a mine, which we did, but to follow that by visiting a mill that processed the ore is even better. From the crushers to the skimmers, the entire process is explained in the place where it happened. Unforgettable.

You can walk all over inside this mill. There is a lot to see and it looks as if everyone just got up and walked out one day so it really represents what it would have looked like on a normal operating day.

The Mayflower Mill has a self guided walking tour that is very educational. It is best to tour the Old Hundred Gold Mine tour and then go to the mill to learn how processed the ore. The mill closed in 1991 without even giving the...More

We found out about the Mayflower Mill at the Silverton visitors center. We did the self guided walking tour. It was very interesting. I learned a lot about mining history. It's a shame that the mill had to close.

When this mill shut down in 1991, it closed its doors behind a shift of workers without any notice of the closing. Workers didn't find out until they got home! As a result, the mill looks much as it did the day it closed --...More
