About
Experience the Grand Canal the way it was intended and take a leisurely cruise on a restored traditional Canal Barge. Cruises operate from Sallins Harbour which is only 30 minutes from Dublin city center by train and is located just off the M7 motorway. The barge is available for private charter for groups any day of the week and operates up to 6 scheduled cruises daily at weekends. Kildare is known as the Canals County with 120 km of still waters crossing its landscape and linking its towns and villages. The Captain will give you a unique insight into the life and history of the Grand Canal as it winds its way through the county Kildare countryside. You can choose a short one hour cruise to the Leinster Aqueduct where the canal crosses over the River Liffey, or a 2.5 hour cruise through Digby Lock where you'll experience the workings of an eighteenth century canal lock. There's bar service on-board serving a selection on locally brewed craft beers and in summer there are two 1.5 hour evening cruises to McCreevey's Lock. Afterwards you can enjoy a meal in one of the waterfront restaurants in Sallins village. The M.V. Amo is licensed by the Department of Transport and Tourism for 12 passengers. There’s an outdoor seating on the open decks at the bow and stern and it has a very comfortable interior with ample seating, toilet facilities and a wood-burning stove. Scheduled cruises operate from March to October and advance booking is essential.

We were a group of friends gathering for my birthday and had the whole barge for the 2 and 1/2hr Digby Lock trip.
We brought our own picnic, wine and cake. Facilities excellent.
Ger, our Skipper, very knowledgable and friendly. We stopped at the Leinster Aqueduct for a little bit of history and to admire the views.
A little Irish soft rain didn’t stop us sitting out at either end with the umbrellas supplied.
Went through the lock to turn around.
I would highly recommend this trip as it can be enjoyed by all ages and group type from one or two persons sharing with others or as a larger group of family/friends.
A great way to slow down and to share and admire the wildlife and countryside.
Thank you Ger and Bargetrip.ie

I booked this for a family day out and what a treat from young to old all had a fantastic time, shoes off, some music on and a cold glass of prosecco and local Kildare brewery beer in evening sun made for great chats and laughs from start to finish. Ger is lovely and a pleasure to chat to. We've booked another trip before we even left. This will be a regular for us for birthdays and special occasions.

We travelled on the one hour trip with our 4 kids ranging in ages from 4 to 15.
All of us really enjoyed it and got something from the trip. Passing all the barges on the way out of sallins was lovely and there were swans and ducks at various points on the water too. Ger was very knowledgeable and friendly and interacted and engaged with kids. The history of the canals in Ireland is fascinating and a trip like this really brings it to life. One added bonus is that this is the perfect activity for current "covid" times we're living in. You get the barge to yourself and you can stay outside or under cover inside without being close to the skipper. All in all a highly recommended trip and one which we'll be returning to with family visiting from overseas in the future. We'll definitely do the longer trip next time.

Friends on a guided tour of Ireland wanted to experience a barge trip. We took an easy train from Dublin to Sallins and found the Grand Canal and barge close by. We motored up the canal through the lock and turned around. We had a typical Irish day of mixed sunshine and rain. Ger gave a running narrative about canal history and the other boats tied to the bank. Deckhand Luca kept the steps and decks wiped of the rain while giving a commentary of what it was like living on a barge and going to college.
Interesting trip. Interesting people.

Just home from a great family outing on Barge trip. We were a party of6 adults and a three year old. We hired for a private 2.5 hour trip. Cabins spacious and clean. Toilet facilities on board.
We brought a picnic with us. There was tea and coffee available and good selection of drinks

Mick the skipper was very helpful and wore a mask throughout even though he was outside.

A lovely way to spend time together. We will do it again soon.

Everyone of us enjoyed the trip. It was extremely relaxing, we had use of the self service bar and Bluetooth speaker. The stove was lit when we boarded and the cabin was extremely cozy and comfortable. The toilet was spotless.

Fantastic trip with the family. Ages 8-80 all really enjoyed it. Hugely relaxing hour and a half complemented by a lovely gin and tonic. Ger and Monica are the most wonderful hosts. Would highly recommend.

Simply gorgeous birthday trip. 7 of us boarded at Sallins to enjoy a 2.5 hr meander along the grand canal to Digby Lock. Utterly fabulous, peaceful and tranquil trip. We split ourselves between the bow and back decks to have the best of both elements. Ger, the skipper, very informative and so accommodating. Spotlessly clean, eco loo on board, and the addition of the honesty bar went down a storm. Highlight was the opening and closing of the lock. Cannot recommend enough. Just to chill for an evening, letting the world pass by.

We had the most fantastic trip last Sunday on the barge to Digby lock.
We left from Sallins and spent 2 and a half hours cruising with Ger. He filled us in on all the local knowledge and gave us plenty of history of the canal what it was used for.
We were a group ranging from 2 year to 72 years and I have to say, every one of us enjoyed every second of it, rain and all.
The barge was fully equipped with refreshments facilities including Tea and coffee and also a mini bar. This would be a lovely trip if u had family or friends home from abroad but we are all local and enjoyed it all the same
I would highly recommend bargetrip.ie for future excursion.
