The Carousel of Happiness is Nederland Colorado's magical menagerie featuring 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel, turning to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. Scott Harrison was a 19-year-old Marine Gunner serving in Vietnam where the gift of a music box and the image of a carousel in a mountain meadow calmed him. Many years later, after rescuing an abandoned carousel, he began carving what would become a whimsical menagerie. It took him a little over 26 years to hand-carve the 56 animals and a dedicated group of volunteers helped bring the carousel to life in the little mountain town west of Boulder. The fully-enclosed Carousel of Happiness turns to the music of a restored 1913 Wurlitzer Band Organ, and is home to a gift shop, toy store and do-it-yourself puppet theater. The Carousel is available for birthday parties and private events, and is fully accessible for people with disabilities.

Our kids, 8 and 9, rode this 3 times. They enjoyed finding a different animal to ride each time. Amazing that these are all hand carved.

So, my husband and I walked by the building that houses the Carousel while looking for lunch, and didn't really give it a second thought. After lunch, a woman at the visitor center convinced us to go back, and I am so glad we listened....More

The story of how the Carousel came to be is well documented on their website and is well worth reading. Here is a place to take young children ( and teenagers and parents and grandparents, and anyone else). Where else could you have this much...More

The story behind the carousel is inspiring. It costs $1 to ride and you can't help but smile. A Vietnam vet built it by hand and it took 26 years. He is still adding to it. You can google images of the creatures he created....More

An amazing accomplishment and a testament to the healing power of art and creativity. The details of the animals were extraordinary. The story of how they came to be is just beautiful.

Our kids had a great time riding the carousel and we enjoyed the experience very much. Hard to imagine that the animals on the carousel are the life's work of one man! A truly unique attraction.
