If you overlook the gas wells that surround the site, you can picture this country 150 years ago. Treeless. Dry. Quiet. Imagine the distressed pioneers and you understand the attraction of the westward mountains that called the settlers. It's a good spot for quiet time...More

Basically, the Grasslands are just that--1000s of acres of grassland. However, the Pawnee Buttes are amazing. The hike to the Buttes is not that long, but it's relatively rugged--lots of steps. We visited in August, and we were amazed at the variety of blooming wildflowers....More

A very primitive place, the Pawnee Indians lived here and did well. Very beautiful views of the amazing buttes. Lots of birds and camping is readily available, in campgrounds or on national forest lands. Pawnee Station has amazing homemade ranch dressing n good food.

We drove through and around the grasslands. There were some beautiful vistas. Since our travels took us this direction, it was fun to see.

It is just not my thing. There was nothing out there. You could see forever. And a certain peacefulness. But just not my thing.

At first you stare in wonder at how such buttes can exist in the middle of the flat lands. And, then you put on a little backpack with some waters and snacks and set out for what really is a pretty easy (~ 4 mile...More

A great day trip from the front range. Fun hike out to the Buttes. 2 miles each way. Bikes are ok, dogs are ok. Picnic area with informational signs at the trail head.
